I'm New Here... Just Found out That Development was Halting :(

Hello,

So I've been trying to get back into Linux since I stopped using my Ubuntu partition entirely a year or so ago. Stumbled across CrunchBang but just saw the post called "THE END."

I was wondering if anyone was thinking of taking the source or atleast part of it, and continuing the development. Again, just curious, this distro just looks so good and even though I've never used #! before I felt somewhat sad that it was being discontinued.

Thoughts? :)

Many people have been able to move it to Jessie (aka janice) by changing repos.  I myself found a great post to switch it from wheezy to Jessie and the new kernel sets it up great ootb for the acer c710 chromebook.  Also native netflix with google chrome etc.

there's such a swell of love for #!, rest assured, this is not so much the end, as a change.  as the news of "The End" spreads, i expect we'll see even more rally to the cause to keep their, our, your, my, everyone's most-loved-distro alive in some form.   ... and expect this shock to produce yet even more crunchbang children.  everyone's talking about going forking mad!  (that last bit may contain some mild hyperbole)

"...taking the source..."  It's basically Debian with some customization.  I know of at least one individual who could probably pull off continuing it, but I'm not sure he is interested since he BBQ's (hint) his own.  But CrunchBang is not just the distro, it's the community as well and I haven't found a better Linux community than this one.  It will be hard to duplicate IMO.

@Anthony(y):  Quite a few of us are looking at the .deb packages that make CrunchBang what it is with the hopes of coming up with our own solutions to, for example, take a Debian netinstall and turn it into something Crunchy.  (In my case, I hope to come up with two versions: one that includes all the nonfree goodies that CrunchBang has traditionally come with, and one that has no dependencies outside of "main".)

I, like so many was very sad to hear about Crunchbang. I have always had this amazing distro on all my machines and although I tried and continue to try out other distros, I always came back to Crunchbang. I stumbled along the way learning linux through this great distro and if it wasn't for the excellent Crunchbang community, I might still be trying to figure out  fstab is and what crontabs are for.

My hope is that something will come out of this and that some variant of Crunchbang will emerge.

In the meantime, can I still use Crunchbang? Will the security updates and regular debian updates still be available? Any recomended distro alternatives I can try out? I tried Manjaro Openbox. Very interesting distro but it at least for me lacks the speed and simplicity of Crunchbang. For the moment, I am using Xubuntu as my main distro.

Again, I want to thank the entire Crunchbang community and this EXCELLENT forum for helping me along the way over the past few years!!

@rmcellig:  Waldorf will continue to receive security updates for as long as Wheezy is oldstable.  After that, it is up to Debian whether to provide Long-Term Support for Wheezy.

Thanks for the suggestion but having spent a fair amount of time with KDE, I don't think it's for me. Too many options? I don't know really. I just like something simplistic... hm, a lightweight and simplistic distro. #! comes to mind :(

But seriously I was wondering if it would be worth keeping #! on my system or not?

A while back, somewhere on this forum, I read a post about how "running sid is better than running testing because bugs are fixed almost right away on sid." Last month I got Jessie-curious and tried Sparky LXDE, Sparky Xfce, and SolydX...unfavorable results on all. Then I went to Siduction. Long story short, I now have a dual-boot Siduction LXDE and Siduction Xfce and haven't had any problems at all.

To each their own, but I think sid and Siduction is my future.

@Bob E: use the remaining time until the freeze is over and try to break siduction as hard as you can this will lower the steep learning curve if the repos are flooded with untested stuff right after the freeze - and trust me, that will break things.

PS: Don't forget to read the upgrade warnings in the forum, may be helpful.

The fluxbox flavor of antiX 13.x isn't too difficult to turn into something resembling CrunchBang.

In fact, I posted a screenshot of my antiX setup in the antiX Screenshots forum.

20150210-01 edit:  I mispoke.  There is no fluxbox flavor of antiX and although not difficult to turn into something resembling CrunchBang, v13.2 Luddite comes with a number of packages that one would probably want to remove.  It's doable, but time consuming.  There is a v13 base (fewer packages), but I couldn't get it to install.  antiX Luddite comes with fluxbox, icewm, and jwm.

Good idea. This would allow the curious among us to give free software purity a shot (if we have the proper hardware) and then bail to nonfreeland after we've had enough of the puritanical life... or maybe we'd be surprised.

In my opinion the only thing that has come to THE END is Philip being involved.

If you like #! on your system then certainly keep it installed.

If you like it as-is then enjoy. 97% of it is debian and you can get support for that all over the interwwebz and the other 3% is tweaks and configs which any forum could likely help you with as well.

If you want newer app versions and such then dist-upgrade to debian jessie and  then 98% of it is debian and you can get support for that all over the interwwebz and the other 2% is tweaks and configs which any forum could likely help you with as well.

In other words, as far as support you are well covered because it is debian.
