Just in case you missed it: The End.

There is so much love for what crunchbang is, that many of us would like to continue it.

Some have suggested their own ideas for forking, and the changes they'd make, or seeking ideas from other users for what changes they'd like.

I would like to present the idea of a community maintained crunchbang continuing without changes.

#! as is, as always was, steady, familiar, no radical erratic frivolities. tried and true.

as was phrased on irc:

the way i see it, we already live in a world with an over-abundance of crunchbang-alike distros, most of which are debian based, but as of today, we're entering a world without actual crunchbang itself. that's the thing that needs replacing imo. something that's /exactly/ like crunchbang.

It needs to be #! exactly, only made to be future-compatible

I shant ramble with further elaborations on finer detail, but will just launch this notion as is, as a sort of rallying cry to attract the vanguard... those who see the value in this idea, and want to help to this end.

I agree. If #! can stay the way it is, with the infrastructure in place, then that would be a plus.

Unfortunately, I think that to keep to the spirit of #! in the future it will be necessary to make some changes to the under-the-hood working, just as happened in the past.

I think someone on the Debian development team (wait, isn't Philip Newborough on that team? ]:D ) should sponsor a CrunchDE package. It would be like LXDE, but with Tint2 and Conky configured OOTB as they are in CrunchBang. Also, it would include the Openbox menu and would not have desktop icons by default.

What about someone working within Debian to provide Openbox as a DE option in the installer for Stretch (Debian 9)?

As far as I understand it, if someone was able to do the actual work it could be included. There is no policy limitation on the number of DEs that can be included in the installer.

The only snag would be that a) Debian likes vanilla packages and b) Openbox is not a DE. So a configured Openbox DE may be out of the question.

I remember once upon a time when I was undecided about what distro to use (a long long time ago) I read a comment how #! had translated the "Unix-y feel to the GUI using conky and tint2". It's a style and a community more than a distro. *sigh* I guess only time will tell how it will find a way to live on.

That sounds like a great solution to me. 100% Debian, and the low-level stuff is sorted out by the experts.

Themeing and user configuration is then the easy bit, followed by remastering if you want.

It would be interesting to know the user numbers for the different Debian metapackages - I bet a CrunchDE would get a lot of downloads very quickly.

Long time user and forum lurker here, subscribed just to post this. I'm up for helping out in any way I can. I've got lots of experience with writing and maintaining technical documentation, and I've also been learning quite a bit about Debian packaging lately. I'd love to work on any successor to !# blessed by its original creator, and built by the community that currently exists.

Well, I'm in as long as we can maintain the original #! objectives of stable, fully-featured and lightweight. This, I suggest, means that the distro/DE needs to remain on a Debian Stable base, rather than Debian Testing.

This means, of course, that considerable development work needs to be done to upgrade our current Waldorf to Janice due to the current changes in the Debian Stable base from Wheezy to Jessie.

Of course, brave souls can still play with Testing/Unstable/Experimental etc but I do recommend that the "main" release remains Stable.

Debian Jessie already comes with OpenBox de, although not a patch on #!, so it's part way there right now

welcome, TheTechStewart. that'd be quite the blessing to have. idk if he ever considered there being a community maintained #!. i saw someone mention the notion of a crunchbang foundation, the crunchbang trust. ^_^ if he likes the idea of communitybang, maybe he could send us on our way with some inaugural charter. hehe. ... or he might go "get off my lawn you pesky kids!"

like whether to stay debian+systemdoze or go devuan and keep the same ol sane init? issues like that? these are the sorts of elaborations i chose to avoid in my initial post. amongst the guardians of the #! spirit, there'd need to be that discussion as to which way is more in keeping with the #! spirit. maybe corenominal could check in on the elves and point in the direction he'd have chosen.

there's room for everyone's notions of their own do-ocracy variations, for packaging solutions etc, and doubtless we'll be able to have those presented too (much like many distros have multiple releases, oft for different desktops), but alongside what i hope will be a continuation of a sort of crunchbang mainline.
