[SOLVED] (installed Chrome) Chromium will not fully load Google Drive

Odd one this. can load google drive in Iceweasel and on every other device and platform I have, but in chromium it "loads" the page (favicon in tab etc, plenty of googly stuff in view page source) but just leaves me with a spinning circle on a white page. Same result in incognito mode, and with a different google account, no amount of refreshing with F5 helps either. Other google things load OK in chromium e.g. gmail, sites, and if I try to create a new document, for example:

https://docs.google.com/document/create?hl=en

This works OK too, and from within document if I seek to add an image from drive I can browse and add an image, so that part works too

interweb searches don't return any help for me. Any suggestions as to what might need fixing?

Re: [SOLVED] (installed Chrome) Chromium will not fully load Google Drive

Which version are you using?

apt-cache policy chromium

I had some problems (many spinning mouse icons, websites that would simply turn blank, unclickable links, extremely high CPU and RAM usage) with the unstable branch of Google Chrome and had to revert to the stable one.

Can you run a live session and try within there? If it works there, I'd propose removing the whole chromium cache (~/.cache) and the config files (~/.config/chromium), and do a re-install (apt-get purge chromium && apt-get install chromium). Radical, but maybe the only way.

And of course, stating the obvious: are some extensions running? If yes, can you disable them temporarily? Also check if the Google Doc extensions are turned on.

Re: [SOLVED] (installed Chrome) Chromium will not fully load Google Drive

I am having the same issue.

Tried disabling all the extensions (I only had adblock and the statler & waldorf scrollbars), no change.

Pretty weird - I mainly have chromium on my computers to have reliable access to google drive, and now this happens. Though a while ago I stopped using it on my old laptop since it was hogging resources far more than iceweasel on my relatively complex spreadsheets.

Here's the version info:

apt-cache policy chromium
chromium:
  Installed: 37.0.2062.120-1~deb7u1
  Candidate: 37.0.2062.120-1~deb7u1
  Version table:
 *** 37.0.2062.120-1~deb7u1 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So if someone else has this issue - you are not alone smile
At least it is pretty easy to workaround - just use iceweasel.

^ quinnuendo (Does Bulsara ring a bell? wink )

Have you actually tried the real thing (Google Chrome)? It might (!) work there in their stable branch. I'm tracking sid but Chrome is stable.

Re: [SOLVED] (installed Chrome) Chromium will not fully load Google Drive

( ^machinebacon yes, I can hear music, thank you for ringing the bells smile ).

Tried to install the "full experience" that is Google Chrome, and I can confirm it works just fine there.

Here is the version information:

apt-cache policy google-chrome-stable
google-chrome-stable:
  Installed: 39.0.2171.99-1
  Candidate: 39.0.2171.99-1
  Version table:
 *** 39.0.2171.99-1 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I am guessing that they did something very weird in the latest update to the Google drive web-site, and that the difference in chromium from version 37 to 39 is probably the problem.

I was usually running chromium because it was good enough and full open source and in the repos.

Anyway thanks for the tip, now we know.
Still I find this to be somewhat questionable behavior on the side of Google to push out a new site that can get stuck in something that is still relatively recent (version 37 is from May 2014). Or on the other hand there is something very wrong with this version of their browser.

Re: [SOLVED] (installed Chrome) Chromium will not fully load Google Drive

OK, useful stuff (just got in from work!)

@mb
I thought incognito mode took out all extensions etc. ?

Version:

chromium:
  Installed: 37.0.2062.120-1~deb7u1
  Candidate: 37.0.2062.120-1~deb7u1
  Version table:
 *** 37.0.2062.120-1~deb7u1 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So same issue as quinnuendo. Just trying real chrome now

Oddly, having installed Chrome, Chromium has started working OK with Google Drive!!   smile

Re: [SOLVED] (installed Chrome) Chromium will not fully load Google Drive

I can confirm the same behavior.

There were no updates to chromium in the meantime, so I can only guess that there is some shared library (though dpkg-query --listfiles shows that google-chrome-stable puts stuff into /opt), OR that they fixed it server side.

I might check later on a different machine that does not have Google chrome on it.

Re: [SOLVED] (installed Chrome) Chromium will not fully load Google Drive

I checked today on a different machine as promised and chromium works just fine there as well, and there has been no chrome installation.

So it seems that it was a server side issue that they fixed in the meantime.

Re: [SOLVED] (installed Chrome) Chromium will not fully load Google Drive

Problems have now arisen on our google apps account at work, Drive won't load through IE. Maybe Google are doing the rounds server side ?  Very annoying as I did a demo and training last Friday, set them to work this week and Drive refused all three of them  mad
