Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

I've managed to get the battery life in Windows 10 extended to about the same as my GNU/Linux installs -- you just have to turn off Windows Defender and the desktop is instantly more responsive with a 50% increase in battery life.

So as long as you don't mind the malware...

^ Yep, you do need some anti-virus thingy on Windows. At least if you do online-banking ... otherwise you'll get blamed negligence in court (and won't get your hacked money back).  lol  lol  roll

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

Arch finally broke on me... more or less completely. Also mysteriously and completely out of nowhere. I did run an Syu about an hour before I rebooted (I run it every day), and it resulted in about 24 MBs of updates. The most critical update looked to be libsystemd, but there wasn't a kernel upgrade. Nevertheless, rebooting resulted in a kernel panic. When I chrooted in from the Arch CD and tried to run pacman, I got shared library errors (Too short. libexpat.so, I believe). Obviously, some kind of corruption. I had a similar issue with corrupted libraries right after I set up the system. Had to reinstall pango and gtkmm and a few other things that had somehow gotten corrupted (right after I initially installed them).

I've never had this happen before, and I really hope it's not the hard drive in the laptop already failing on me. But how else do files just suddenly get corrupted out of nowhere?

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^ I wiped 8.1 completely a good while ago.  wink

Decided to install Elementary despite these issues, and it is AWESOME. Really digging the simple interface. Pretty snappy, too. I am about to run the smart tools on the drive to see what they detect.

Oh yeah... Only issue with Elementary is that it's not detecting my external monitor (like.. at all).

It wasn't detected OOTB with the Crunchbang kernel, either, but I figured this one would be new enough...

EDIT: Grabbed kernel 3.13. Still no detection... And then 3.17.. No detection. Now I'm confused.

And now things are getting odder. I tighened the cable, and now I do get a duplicated display the size of the laptop's screen on the external, but xrandr still isn't detecting it.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^ I almost had it, last night, and then the download decided to "finish" prematurely with about 100 MBs to go. I hate when that sort of thing happens.

I'm grabbing the MATE version at the moment, but at a relatively slow speed. 34 minutes remaining.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^ I got it. Pretty nice. Only issue was that the grub install failed for some reason during the setup. After it was done, I had to chroot in myself, install the grub package, and configure it. Nm-applet is there, as well as a battery icon. Sound works OOTB. It's pretty stripped down in other ways (had to install unzip, for example). Worth a try, for sure.

Installed browser is Firefox, BTW.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

I'm giving SparkyLinux a try.  I want to have an alternative in case something ever happens to CrunchBang.  I've installed Sparky on my ASUS laptop without incident, but so far have been unsuccessful at installing it on my Dell Studio 1557 laptop.  There's some kind of issue(s) with the GUI installer and the command line installer doesn't work with GPT discs.  I think I turned my hard drive into a GPT disc when I played around with Antergos a few weeks ago.
