I completely agree. A new factory install doesn't need secure erasure ... although as you suggest you can always simply forego the ordeal by hitting "skip." Still, this is just the sort of tooltip to which Mint/*buntu newbies are accustomed.

(Granted, we're a rather different, more DIY-oriented breed, but still, it would be a tiny little detail that detail mavens like Dedoimedo and others could conceivably notice and pause to praise.)

If leaking some information about how much data you have, or leaving past drive contents potentially recoverable isn't an issue, then by all means click skip, however, making this the default action is never a good plan, the default should always be the secure option, ie fill the drive with (pseudo)random data, securely erasing past contents, and making the entire thing appear random noise. Ideally it should be done, even on new drives.

The trick is to do this manually before you begin to speed matters up, and use a faster method than dd using /dev/urandom

The two quick ways (saving many hours) are either to get and compile frandom (mentioned back up this thread a ways by me), or dmcrypt, and dd /dev/zero to the mapped drive, (instructions on the cryptsetup wiki in the FAQ) either one is well worth the short time expended learning how in view of the huge amount of time saved.

Today I got an email that my terminator patch from a long time ago has finally made it into a release, 0.97-3, now on sid. It fixes terminator when it is symlinked as x-terminal-emulator. Assuming no bugs get filed it should hit jessie reasonably soon.

For crunchbang this means we can use x-terminal-emulator in the openbox configs instead of hardcoding terminator everywhere.

Also while we are at it, can we point cb-metapackage at compton in jessie, now that it is well ahead of the last compton-git release? I've had some breakage trying to upgrade it in the past.

Please make the next version newbie-friendly to install.
Not only making the ISO NON-bootable a pain, but the suggested tool doesn't look for *.iso files & my USB drive is locked so I can't write to it. Not excited about having to burn a Linux LiveCD just to run a few commands to install another distro. If I've got the CD in the drive, I'll just install that version instead then install OpenBox, which would be fewer steps.

Seems that you have to be at least an medium-skilled Linux user to even instal this OS. Which is fine, but please at least update your home page to be more forthcoming about the required skill level.
Too bad, the community here seems cool.

The suggested tool is dd. Which has worked fine for thousands of users, so unless you describe your problem in more detail, you can't blame it on the distro.

Huge thread! Is it a good time to start sub-topics such as "systemd vs init", "development stacks", "GRUB", etc., so that it is easier to find and iterate on ideas about a certain sub-topic?

Btw, I like the idea of toggling touchpad with a script. I managed to create a simple script to do it for my specific touchpad, and have set a "Super + Alt + t" shortcut in OpenBox to run it. I am happy if that could contribute to the next #! release

Many of us already do the same thing, but with the variety of hardware possible for #! it is unlikely to be straightforward to have a universal script(s).

#! is very easy to install. No different than any *buntu variety. There are many resources to install whether it be dd or using gui's like unetbootin. Don't blame #! ...just search "make a bootable linux usb" and your problems will be solved.

We have

obapps
obconf
obmenu
lxappearance

so why not obkey to round things off.

Now I'm use to the OB rc.xml file now. However the key here is a two parter:

newbies - me: 'slightly' past that stage
people who hate editing .xml files - me: well {sigh} OK, if I have to ...

Note: My quality of and speed of typing are drastically reduced due to the need to proofread for "speling an gramer erors".

Editing .xml makes me feel dyslexic, like many others including very experienced programmers (which I am not)

Those are available in Debian or one of the other Debian derivatives, so at most edit your sources list and apt-get any that you want.
They are already options.

Nice! It took me ages to figure out how to make urxvt my default instead of terminator and I still can't get rid of terminator completely cause it takes the pipemenus with it....

Don't get me wrong, I use SpaceFM and to me it is easily the best file manager ever.
