So, would an Ubuntu Minimal install be a good starting point? And do we know how much of #! is #! and not Debian? 'Cos that'd help in setting up the configs and stuff, I guess...

To be perfectly honest, I've never found anything that's in Debian but not Ubuntu, although I might be wrong. You can check the Waldorf packages here http://packages.crunchbang.org/waldorf/pool/main/

Sure, I Would think so. but that brings up another question...
who's going to build it?

Start here: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=221231
You will need to replace the statler repo with waldorf, but it's actually quite easy to crunchify an Ubuntu netinstall. Or an antix install: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic. … 00#p233800

Shouldn't be too much of a problem to add that repo to the sources of an Ubuntu Minimal install... it *should* all be compatible... This should be a starting point. If I have time (other commitments being a little crazy at the moment) I'll install Ubuntu minimally either tonight or sometime this week, and begin building up a Wiggle Puppy system. Might I inquire as to the origin of the name Wiggle Puppy, incidentally?

Thank you! This was pretty much the process I had in mind, but there were a few things in there that I was unaware of, so that has saved me a few breakages I'm downloading an Ubuntu minimal install now (Saucy Salamander).

Aha! I'm not too familiar with The Simpsons (I have no TV), so I didn't get the reference...

In the meantime, I'll try and think of all the things we might need to consider and try and get an idea of cost.

Cool. I can test too when you're ready.
If anyone has some tips as to what we need to consider, please wade in with your comments/thoughts etc.

Two things:
1) Is Wiggle Puppy the distro name or the release codename?
2)I made a temporary logo until there's a proper one:
Edit: I'm now setting up a partition on my HDD to begin the install/building of Wiggle Puppy...

you sure about that? I have a couple machines I can dedicate to this project right now

Yes. Let's do this.
Love the logo but bear in mind Canonical are fairly "protective" of their brand.

Wiggle Puppy is the code name, I guess. It could really be anything. I don't think the name is so important at this stage.

In which case, it would be much better if you were to build up the system; I would be running on the very little spare time I have and my 8 yr old laptop I can definitely help out with testing though, and I could help with stuff like writing new welcome scripts and such.
@intoCB, yeah, that logo will in all likelihood have to go - it was just a two minutes in GIMP thing, and a much better one can I am sure be produced by a more skilled artist than me

Wiggle Puppy! I'm a big Ralph Wiggum fan, so I love the name.
One thing I don't understand though, why based on Ubuntu instead of the obvious distro? (Puppy!!!)
Have you tried the historical CrunchBang releases based on Ubuntu yet? That is where I would start; maybe see if you can get them upgraded to the current release. Also check out MadBox which is a very slick Ubuntu-based distro. And of course the fine work of the BBQ team, at first when I read the name of this thread, I assumed it was one of their release announcements.

Using an old ubuntu-based crunchbang as a starting point or a source of ideas at least would be good... but as I said I'm gonna back out of building a testing image right now as I'm not too confident I'll succeed or have enough time

^^
1. Don't really know puppy but the main inspiration for this was getting a sense that this is what people like ew want.
2. Had mixed results with Ubuntu-based historical versions. But I would prefer to adhere to what #! is currently.
3. Madbox is good but a bit less solid than #! and it isn't it based on the LTS?
4. Well, I am a big fan of Linuxbbq, particularly the excellent documentation - and freely recognise the conceptual influence but this is meant to be day-to-day useable and to stand the test of time. I think Linuxbbq is more about trying different flavours of stuff.

I'd tend to agree with all of this...
I'll just post up here a list of development roles so that we kinda know what each of us is doing towards Wiggle Puppy; it should help get things going. This is certainly not a definitive list and is definitely open to modification/expansion! Just as a rough idea:
intoCB: primary considerer of things and any costs, distro tester
CSCoder4ever: testing image builder/distro tester, scripting
photonucleon: distro tester, bits of scripting here and there

I could do some scripting as well, however, which machine should I build this image on?
my htpc which has an i3 processor, 8GB RAM, and 6770 video card or should I use my AMD e350 box (basically a nettop)
also start out with the 32-bit ISO or the 64-bit?

I guess it's up to you, really... will the image be 32bit? 64bit? One of each? I only have my rather old EasyNote with an Intel Celeron M... runs #! fine though, so testing Wiggle Puppy images shouldn't be a problem for me...
