Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

My Mom has an Acer Aspire All In One 5600 desktop computer.

I have tried the following distros:

Puppy Linux,
Xubuntu, Lubuntu
Linux  Lite
Mint 15
as  well as a  few other distros

Right now I have her using Puppy Linux 5.2.8

Her needs are very simple:
Solitaire
Skype
Facebook, Banking,Mail (I use Firefox or Chrome for this)

She would need a single mouse click solution or something similar. It has to be easy. Look at this  from the perspective of a senior.

Her eyesight isn't the greatest so  the fonts as  well as  the mouse pointer must be large.

I love Crunchbang for it's simplicity,  flexibility and speed.

I will be trying later booting from the #! CD and see how  it goes. She said I can  have  her computer for a week to come up with a simple solution.

Thanks  so much for the feedback!!!

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

Hey rmcelling!

I would say: Yes Crunchbang is!

for a fast and and simple one-click-solution i would:

(-replace grub with syslinux for means of speed)
-let slim autologin
-strip down tint2 to only launchers with the most common applications (and very big icons)
-set openbox to only have one workspace and large lettering
-clean up openbox-menu
-strip down conky to only display  HUGH clock (maybe analog) and a calender if wanted
-find a nice wallpaper

..and call it GrannyBang.
(don`t mean to offend s.o.)

sounds like a lot of work, but i think it isn`t that hard to do and i really think the default configs arn`t something i would present to my grandparents ;-)
i hope i could help you, and if you have trouble doing one of the things i have mentioned, feel free to ask.
Thoug there are probably more knowlageable people round here.

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

... please don't call it grannybang... o.O

Essentially a larger font in the menu and clock - add a preset key for chrome, solitaire, skype and email (F1, F2, F3 and F4 would be good) and you are set to go. That one-click thing can be set in thunar so thats all good.

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

There are two items from Nalk's list that I need to do. I don't think I will go with the large icons on tint2 because I would need to change the height of tint2 to something really big. This will take up quite a bit of screen real estate.

Still not sure how to do these:

strip down conky to only display hugh clock and a calender

replace grub with syslinux

I tried LXDE and XFCE distros but I wanted to scale down to something really simple with nothing on the desktop aside from what she needs.

I told you my opinion was worth two cents... :-)

Do you have autologin working now?

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

Your opinion is worth more than 2 cents smile I have autologin working thanks to Slimconf. I will stay with GRUB. Last think I am my Mom need are quirky things that might occur.

So the only thing left is how to configure conky to display an analog clock and/or calendar.

I have never used conky before except for modifying the Crunchbang conkyrc file.

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

Thanks Nalk!

I have this code in my conky setup. One thing I can't figure out is how to increase the font size of the time. The date size is fine.

${alignr}${font Arial Black:size:14}${time %r}${font}
${alignr}${Time %A %m %d %Y}

Is this the wrong code to use?

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

Try this:

${font Arial Black:size=24}$alignr${time %r}
${font Arial Black:size=14}$alignr${time %A %m %d %Y}

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

Does your mother need the keyboard shortcuts? :-) Delete them from conkyrc if she doesn't. Otherwise, if the clock code is before the shortcuts, you will need to set the font back to the default for the shortcuts. Color I'm not sure about. Please post your .conkyrc file.

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

Try this one. I changed the time format a little; if you really want seconds just change it back to what you had. If the font size for the shortcuts is wrong, you can change that too. If you don't want the clock to be white, change the ${color ffffff} to something else. If you want it to be gray like everything else, just remove the ${color ffffff} entirely.

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

Now that I have her computer ready for the most part, there are a few little things I have to take care of. One of them is an easy GUI way of setting the time. My understanding is that the only way is to use tzdata. I haven't used this yet. I'll have to search for a tutorial in this forum to see if there is a way to set the time/timezone. Aside from that, getting back to my Mom's computer, a GUI solution would be nice. I'm not in the xfce environment but opted instead to stay with Openbox.

Re: Is Crunchbang up for the task - My Mom's computer

Who said that #! was for nerds and advanced users? I just received a call from my Mom thanking me for maiking her Acer #! friendly. All she needs to know is F1, F2 and F3. She is totally amazed at how easy and quick #! is to use. Just thought I would pass along the fruits of my labor and that it is paying off in a big way. smile
