Can you switch to a virtual console and log in? ( using Ctrl+Alt+F2 key combo )
I don't have the computer handy at the moment, but I don't think I can log in as any kind of user if I can't even get past booting up in grub.
If the question is about getting a hold of logs, I can always do a liveboot.
The screen going black makes me think it is now a problem with xserver. Just a guess though.
Because you were seeing something about tmp, do the liveboot, mount your #! root partition and run
chmod 1777 /path-to-mounted-crunchbang-root/tmp
And post content of
from the #! root filsystem while you are livebooted.
Removing 'quiet' from the boot options in GRUB would perhaps be intersting too:
When on the grub menu, press 'e' for edit
remove quiet from the line starting with 'linux'
Press 'F10' to boot.
You should now see more boot messages whizzling by, and be able to determine if it is a boot problem or a problem with the X server.
