Pulse-audio / Alsamixer not working?

Hello,
Ive just started using crunchbang and im really happy with how the system functions and i can pretty much see myself using it for some time.
However i have encountered a problem, I dont have any audio. Pulse-audio doesn't seem to be working, which is the default sound software if im not mistaken. I dont have a volume control icon on the dock and under open box menu>multimedia, the application "volume control" doesnt do anything.
Ive tried reinstalling pavcontrol but still no luck, Im fairly new to troubleshooting on this level so im not really sure what i should add to this post to make it easier for anyone to help me, if there is anything i should add, please let me know ill add it as soon as i possibly can.

Many thanks
J

EDIT:
After some more snooping, i belive the actual problem lies with alsamixer. On boot, when the system tests the different elements that are installed, alsamixer gives a long string of errors.
Such as this when i enter it into consiole:

sudo Amixer

ALSA lib conf.c:3314:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library libasound_module_conf_pulse.so
ALSA lib control.c:951:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory

alsamixer

If on the first bar there is 'MM' at base then volume is muted. Press 'm' to unmute. Often this, for starters...

Re: Pulse-audio / Alsamixer not working?

I get the feeling something burped when you installed the system, I might be wrong.  If you want to do a check to make sure:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This should make sure your packages are all there and up to date.

Re: Pulse-audio / Alsamixer not working?

Ive done a little more digging and ive found that /usr/share/alsa-base is an empty folder, according to the files that come with alsa-base, there should be a folder and im guessing, files in there.
Is there any way to download the files seperately?
Ive tried reinstalling the alsa-base and it didnt do anything

Re: Pulse-audio / Alsamixer not working?

As root have your tried running

alsactl init

Of course make sure alsa-base is still installed first if you've removed it. Other than that, you might have to set your default sound card with /etc/asound.conf

Re: Pulse-audio / Alsamixer not working?

Try removing alsa completely - purge and then re-install. You may need to force ignore dependencies, not sure what it will try take with it.

Re: Pulse-audio / Alsamixer not working?

It looks like you have 2 soundcard outputs.

[    7.263499] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:01.1: irq 44 for MSI/MSI-X
[    7.263541] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:01.1: setting latency timer to 64
[    7.349774] msi_laptop: Identified laptop model 'MSI U270'
[ 7.349786] msi_laptop: Brightness ignored, must be controlled by ACPI video driver
[ 7.363894] input: MSI Laptop hotkeys as /devices/virtual/input/input6
[    8.364377] msi_laptop: driver 0.5 successfully loaded
[    8.398608] HDMI status: Codec=0 Pin=3 Presence_Detect=0 ELD_Valid=0
[    8.399004] input: HD-Audio Generic HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.1/sound/card0/input7

(Probably HDMI is set as default.)
In your music or video program, edit the output section to alsa; see if you now have sound.

Re: Pulse-audio / Alsamixer not working?

Hm, it looks like you accidentally double posted output of asound version in the output of /etc/asound.conf. Really doesn't matter but if you have a default pulse /etc/asound.conf you might want to make a copy of it.

In /etc/asound.conf try this

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}

Reboot run alsamixer and make sure nothing is muted.
