What do you do for a living?

I am sure there must already be a thread for this but I couldn't find it.

I have had a total of 32 jobs from the age of 19 to 33, mostly temporary ones through an agency with some short term casual contracts. These included: Accounts, Admin, Reception, Payroll and finance. Also a short but unforgettable stint in an estate agent as an assistant to the most annoying woman ever.

I had one permanent job as an insurance premium allocation clerk but due to a company takeover we all got made redundant.

I don't currently work, due to ill health.

What about you?

Re: What do you do for a living?

i do wage tax administration, also known as payroll administration. i make your payslips, help employers out with questions about Dutch wage tax and general wage tax administration stuff like pensions, the various Dutch insurances, and whatever else comes along.
the work sounds boring, and really the only skill i have from it is the fact that i actually understand all the numbers that are on a payslip. a Dutch one that is. i used to do international payroll administration too, for people who come to work in the Netherlands etc, so i know a little bit about the American, British, Swiss, German, Belgium, French and some other countries wage tax systems, plus some about the American 401K and medicare etc. interesting stuff. but i now just do regular Dutch payroll, albeit specialized in the different collective labor agreements we have here.
the work is entertaining enough though, as the rules basically change each year, and sometimes the government decides to start an entire new policy and that means a big change, so you gotta keep alert and keep thinking. if i don't have to keep thinking, i will start getting bored with my job and won't take it anymore. so this is okay.

aside from this i've done a bunch of nonsense jobs like working in supermarkets and greenhouses (we have a lot of those here) and so on. very boring.

If you've ever shopped at one of those "home improvement warehouses", I'm the guy who keeps the shelves stocked while the department associates are "busy" flapping their gums.

I wouldn't exactly call it a living...

I'm a linux network analyst that implements and supports WiFi networks on trains/busses all over the world.

Oddly though my general linux skills aren't too hot as I've only been in the role for 18 months and came from the more obvious Windows land.

Re: What do you do for a living?

I'm a newspaper editor in what was once a proud and important profession, but now not so much. Since I'm too old to do anything else and too young to retire, I'm probably going to take the LPI and RHCSA exams sometime soon and see if I can do something tech-related.

Librarian. It's a dream job for a internet junkie like me. I can use many hours of my workday for hanging in suspicious forums like this with a cover of "information search".. big_smile
Besides, searching tips for my conky.conf really is serious work! lol

Re: What do you do for a living?

Restaurant owner/chef.
Sounds cool maybe and it has its good points, but not all that amazing. Some people seem to have a flair for this kind of business and make money... or used to, before the bottom fell out of the economy for everyone.

Before that I was an English teacher, which also has its ups and downs.

Re: What do you do for a living?

I find it amazing how few people have a computer-based background and still use Crunchbang.

There was definitely a time when the only people using linux were those who could compile, build, and debug it themselves.

I think its great to see that many people choose linux.
