Re: Conky v1.9 Thread

@ dk75 and Sector11
After that explanation I now understand what "no_buffers" does.

no_buffers Subtract (file system) buffers from used memory?

It controls they way ${mem} variables report used memory.

I remember changing it to

no_buffers no

and I got ${mem} reporting the used memory with buffers/cache included.

I think that if ${memfree} does not change with the setting of "no_buffers" but ${mem} does it is a bug in conky.

Of course you realize that like all things with mathematics - numbers can be twisted until you get a result you like:
adppe77Y.jpg
If you don't advertise "no_buffers yes" or "no_buffers no" people will never know.

My kind of math!

Re: Conky v1.9 Thread

^ Yes I think the problem with some of the conky settings and objects is that they have really bad descriptions so no one knows what they do.

It is much worse for the configuration settings because it is hard to tell if they have changed anything or even if you are using them correctly since many of them don't have example calls like the objects do.

I think the best thing to do would be to have separate mem variables with and without buffers and cache included.

Re: Conky v1.9 Thread

@ arclance

For the most part it fairly easy as to what things do but putting this 'memory' stuff together today via posts from lwfitz, dk75 and you have shown that sometimes there are deeper connections to things that may go overlooked.

It does however make for a nice learning streak and that always feels good.  big_smile

Personally I prefer the:

no_buffer yes

It's all just approximate anyway and depends on what you are looking at:

Re: Conky v1.9 Thread

^ For the most part the conky docs have "good enough" descriptions, not great, but that is not unusual.

It's things like this

update_interval_on_battery Update interval when running on batterypower

that annoy me.

In this case it is because it does not say what types of battery power are supported.
The user has no way to know if there UPS will be detected by this feature since only its effect is documented.

There are even bug reports about this problem since the hardcoded battery may not be the right one on some computers.

Hey guys,

It's been awhile since I asked a Conky question... is the Monster thread okay for questions, or just for showing off our screenshots and config files?

Re: Conky v1.9 Thread

Excellent.

I'm in the process of getting a screenshot for my problem, but the issue is Conky transparency. What I'd like to do is give the Conky window a level of opacity that will make it's content easily readable, no matter what I've got going on as a background.

I've been able to get the window to go black, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong in my config settings.

Is it possible that my #! window manager just isn't compatible with the opacity features?

Here's my settings...

##############################################
# Settings
##############################################
background yes
use_xft yes
xftfont sans:size=9
xftalpha 1
update_interval 1.0
total_run_times 0
own_window yes
own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_argb_value 200
own_window_type desktop
double_buffer yes
minimum_size 200 200
maximum_width 270
draw_shades no
draw_outline no
draw_borders no
draw_graph_borders yes
default_color d8d8d8
default_shade_color 000000
default_outline_color d9d7d6
alignment top_right
gap_x 12
gap_y 12
no_buffers yes
uppercase no
cpu_avg_samples 2
override_utf8_locale yes
if_up_strictness address

Fortune favors the bold.

I run #! with OpenBox, it's not that it's your conky settings.

Are you using a composite manager?
If not change this:

own_window yes
# own_window_argb_visual yes ## requires a composite manager
# own_window_argb_value 200 ## requires a composite manager
own_window_type normal #desktop

and use draw-bk.lua: get it here
