Re: what's your favorite piece of proprietary software?

yes, I tried foobnix once and was a bit confused about the get-music online part. I am yet to find a decent music player for linux that handles both folders and tags. someone should get foobar over to linux 1:1 - it is the perfect player.

Re: what's your favorite piece of proprietary software?

definitely the google software suite: gmail, google docs, google maps, google reader, google+

I'm surprised this hasn't come up yet.  Don't forget that's all proprietary and closed down :-)

Also, reminded me how much I love Amazon's store.  Really usable interface, I love shopping via Amazon.

Re: what's your favorite piece of proprietary software?

@slob:  You seem to need OS X for work purposes, which is unfortunate.  Once I realized I could basically get by on linux, benny and I figured out how to install linux on my Mac Mini :-D

Re: what's your favorite piece of proprietary software?

My biggest gripe (with OSX) is that they forked the desktop.  That is, there's Cocoa and X.  It smacks of the Windows/Exceed or Windows/Xming days when X is just bolted on.

Re: what's your favorite piece of proprietary software?

I don't really have a favorite; I find that FOSS pretty much takes care of everything I need.

I do, however, feel that there's a gap in the video editing market though..

Re: what's your favorite piece of proprietary software?

@ hinto
Oh, don't even get me started on Cocoa!!

But it gets worse in 10.8 Mountain Lion, I've been lead to believe. X11 will no longer be included, with all "X-related" stuff being handled by Xquartz instead. Sure, most stuff will be safe and Xcode, GCC and Homebrew will still work, but what about applications that specifically look for X11?!  Applications like Inkscape, for example, which I use in tandem with Illustrator a lot.

How do you even call yourself a UNIX certified OS without including X11?

Re: what's your favorite piece of proprietary software?

@el_koraco: Ever thought about using SUSE? They seem to be pretty on the ball about providing tech support to people migrating from Windows to Linux (Converting from Active Directory to eDirectory, moving from RC2 print services to iPrint and so on and so forth). If you have to integrate a few Windows systems into the mix to support smart card readers or something or other it's not too terribly difficult.
