Re: XFCE 4.8pre1 is out

The new Xfce 4.8 pre1 has been released for 'testing' purposes . . . awesome!!

Let's give OUR desktop environment all the support and help we can.

It's been a long time coming.

Xfce has been my favorite desktop for many a year.
With #! I use both Openbox and Xfce . . . corenominal made a wise choice in this, and a good menu layout.

Re: XFCE 4.8pre1 is out

It would be wonderful to have Xfce 4.8 in Statler's final release!

I wonder if that is somehow conceivable, have a look at the schedule:

Re: XFCE 4.8pre1 is out

Sounds like it might be either a lot heavier or a lot lighter. When someone tried it out tell me the details. We should make Alpha 3 with the new Xfce Alpha. I mean Alpha-to-Alpha, right?

Except for when you install the xfce version XD.

srsly though, lx products don't seem to agree with my system. Tried to install Peppermint the other day and it didn't work b/c the Openbox was full of LXDE tools.

I can't see that happening. Statler is based on Squeeze and there is no chance of 4.8 making it into Squeeze. If you want it I'd imagine you'd need to get it from unstable some time after it is released. If you are looking for a distro that will implement it quickly then something like Zenwalk might be a better choice.

Indeed, you must be right. As you suggest, I'll give a try to Zenwalk, thank you very much.

Or if you want to stay with Debian change to Wheezy (the next testing) or Sid

There are no package updates while Debian testing is frozen.
If you gonna stay with testing, then you will get XFCE 4.8 at some point, but not in Squeeze.

Re: XFCE 4.8pre1 is out

Squeeze will be released as Debian  stable about a month before Xfce 4.8, which means it will never be in Squeeze.

The only updates after Debian becomes "stable" are security patches.

Re: XFCE 4.8pre1 is out

I guess I could add a sid repo, install 4.8, then remove the sid repo.

Can't add Xfce-4.8 from the Squeeze+backports repros?  Would it be in the Squeeze backports?

Or go for a one-time install from Debian-Sid or Experimental.

Re: XFCE 4.8pre1 is out

I don't know if it will be in backports, that is fairly new for Debian official. It has been available before but not "official".
If you do a one time install of anything from Sid or experimental you will miss any security or bug patches. That is the problem with removing the repository.
You would be better off either apt-pinning or just running Sid.

Or stay with testing.

Zenwalk have their first alpha release of Xfce 4.8 available smile It seems kinda buggy but that is to be expected at this stage.

Saw this elsewhere on the forum:

If you want it now,  there is a way.
But only amd64.
