Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

@corenominal
still testing but did not find anything strange by now.
just an idea about the VERY GOOD startup script:
for the convenience of all the people not using a gb keymap you could put something like this into the script (assuming people use kb matching to $LANG)

echo "setkbmap $(echo $LANG | cut -c-2) &" >> $HOME/.config/openbox/autostart.sh

and delete the lines about the live-kbm instead?
Its just something i thought of while running the script and afterwards even seeing the root-menu remastered (very nice)

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

just to be confirmed ... b43 dell wireless works great on livecd ... but as far as my lan on laptop (Dell Inspirion 6400) is damaged ... there is an obvious question ... would it work after text-install?

well livecd works sweet ... xfce4-amd64 version ... looking forward to 1st beta or rc ... thank you

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

Like Tech, I also had to run update-grub to get Statler alpha 2 to list my other partitions. This worked fine in alpha1.

Other than that, everything's running surprisingly smoothly. Or not that surprisingly, given it's Crunchbang.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

Hmm. I've just found that Nitrogen doesn't show any wallpapers. It's definitely set up to look at the right folder, and the folder certainly contains the desktop pictures, but Nitrogen's window is completely empty. Anybody else found this?

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

Hi Winotree,

My config files will indeed have carried over from alpha1, as I've got the same /home partition. I agree that this seems likely to be the cause of the problem. I'm still pretty puzzled, though, as Nitrogen says it's looking in the right place.

HOLD ON! Solved it...

Running Nitrogen from the alt-F2 menu works fine. It seems the issue is that the Alpha 2 Openbox menu executes the command:

nitrogen ~/images/wallpapers/

and I've moved my wallpapers to a different folder. Okay, so it's problem solved, but it still seems a bit strange that when I open Nitrogen using this default Statler menu setting, it SAYS it's looking in ~/pictures/desktop (where my wallpapers are) even though it isn't, and is actually looking in ~/images/wallpapers (which doesn't exist).

But anyway, the solution is to tweak the Openbox menu setting to point to the right place.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

Typing this from the new Live CD on my Dell Mini 9 (wifi working OK o-o-t-b)! I also did a full install on my oldest computer (500mhz pentium 3 w/ 128mb ram). The post-install script is genius! Great work. I will post back with more thoughts once I've had some time to play around with it.

Downloaded and tested the xfce version: very nice distro! A very lightweight distro, like #! with openbox. Xubuntu and lubuntu are nothing!

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

This is good news, I'm downloading the 64bit Openbox version right now. Alpha 1 worked great for me until I installed the ATI proprietary drivers and then everything went wrong. I'm exited to give it a try.

I have tried openbox and it is very nice and fast, xfce is better? is stable enough to be able to install? is lighter than PCLinuxOS lxde? occupies much space on hd?

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

Wow happy day big_smile Anyway I'm only trying the live CD, a friend will test it properly, i.e. install it, since I don't have the time and I'm stupid happy with the alpha... yeah, the openbox thing is pretty much the fastest distro that I came across that's also full featured. And alpha 1 is rock stable on my FSC with Celeron, 1GB  RAM and Intel's integrated graphics...

On a side note, those bulbs sure look good as wallpaper, I'd make them default smile and wow, "shiki statler" big_smile I wonder if and where I can get both the GTK and Openbox themes for my alpha 1.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

First of all, congratulation to Phillip at this very excellent alpha and the hard work he put on it.
I tried both openbox(my favorite) and xfce on live mode. boot is way better than the first alpha, no hassle at all with usb boot. The system is fast and responsive. very good touch the option for installing openoffice and dropbox. Thunar looks good as I have long time to use it, but it's a good replacement for the under development pcmanfm. The collection of themes are very rich and good ( thanks alot for this). No problem at all with Lan and wireless ( my system is laptop hp compaq nx7000 centrino). The default theme and font very nice but need more work. I really think it's time to change the default look of conky. All in all the alpha 2 is way better than the first one and more stable(in live mode). But I didn't install it, the reason is I'm a bit command line oriented user (I know it's very selfish of me not installing and testing it), but at the moment I'm a bit busy at work and it's a hassle for me to test packages I don't really use, or to remove the defaults one's and installing the one I use. I really don't dual boot, if I want to test a distro I install it to harddisk and make it my primary operating system, but for now I'll be sticking to cb lite 9.04.01.
vacations are very close now big_smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

@0day to me on my hardware CB-Openbox is alot lighter than PCLinuxOS-lxde, but PCLinuxOS makes a really nice Openbox spin also thats super fast. Between CB-OB, and PCLinuxOS-OB Id say speed goes in CB's favor by a very slight margin. Id even say CB-Xfce is faster also than PCLOS-OB, not by alot but in the long run you will notice the slight difference.

Opps....also to answer your wait for beta or stable question. It was said somewhere on this forum that crunchbang statler in alpha is more stable than some distros final. I agree.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 2 Released

Whoah!! O_O

I disappear for a couple of days and BAM, new alpha release!! big_smile

Think I'll keep Alpha1 on my desktop, since I don't have much time this week and getting Statler working properly on it takes a bit of time.

I'll give Alpha2 a go on my netbook tomorrow or the day after... will be a good way to test out the USB install.
Will post my impressions then.

Thanks a lot, Corenominal. smile
