Serving UPnP - general advice

Hi.

Sorry that this isn't strictly about #!, but this is my default community for Linux advice. I've learnt most of what I know about Linux from #!, so hope it's OK to ask.

I want to make my media available over the WAN, but hate Plex, which I gather is "safe". I'd prefer to use Mediatomb, but just opening up a single port isn't safe. If somebody could explain all this to me in words of one syllable, or refer me to some good reading, I would appreciate it. I am very IT savvy, but from a W****** background, and I clearly have no idea about WAN networking. I have some glaring Linux blindspots.

Thanks in advance.
