Re: Another Way

I really liked Point Linux 3.0 b3 Gnome. But this project is barely alive.

Re: Another Way

Well, at the time of Wheezy there was no MATE in Debian and Point Linux served a clear purpose. Now it's easy to install Debian with MATE, there is less need for such a distro.

But the best FOSS projects come from someone having an itch that needs scratching. If you really feel such a distro should exist, you sound like the ideal person to get it started. I am happy with Debian + MATE.

I tried Ubuntu MATE but it was too buggy and bloated. Only kidding. Ubuntu MATE is a mighty distro warrior and I understand that much of the presence of MATE in Debian comes the Ubuntu MATE team.

I've even come up with the name. MINIGNOME. MINIMATE.  big_smile

Re: Another Way

I've thought about doing it before. But even though MATE is user-friendly, and probably the best choice for people who are new to Linux, to me it seems a bit to boring.

Actually, the more I try of all kinds of UI's, then the more certain I am of the fact that Openbox is the best there is. Because of the transparent and intuitive structure which makes it easy to tweak/hack, and of course the right-click openbox-menu. Actually, it doesn't matter how good something is, if it doesn't have the right-click menu. That's a dealbreaker for me, and I'm not going to bother to try anything without it in the future. Because I know that I will miss it.

I could make a Gnome-openbox distro, but there would be no point in it... The Gnome-part would just be to slow it down..., and I would end up hiding it away. It would look like a normal openbox-distro. Just slower.

Re: Another Way

About customization: dconf-editor configures the system better than any control center.  smile

Edited: Only right-click menu (in MATE) is still not configured there.  big_smile

Re: Another Way

Bad luck. There is FULL MATE. There is CORE MATE (free components). There is no MINI MATE.

sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-core --no-install-recommends

... and see what happens?

I'm off to check!

Re: Another Way

On my Bunsen install...

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  caja caja-common gvfs-bin libcaja-extension1 libcanberra-gtk0 libcanberra0
  libelfg0 libexempi3 libfftw3-single3 libgail18 libglib2.0-bin
  libglib2.0-data libgtk2.0-bin libmarco-private0 libmate-desktop-2-17
  libmate-menu2 libmate-panel-applet-4-1 libmate-slab0
  libmate-window-settings1 libmatekbd-common libmatekbd4 libmateweather-common
  libmateweather1 libpulse-mainloop-glib0 libpulsedsp libunique-1.0-0
  libwebrtc-audio-processing-0 marco marco-common mate-backgrounds
  mate-control-center mate-control-center-common mate-desktop
  mate-desktop-common mate-desktop-environment-core mate-icon-theme mate-menus
  mate-panel mate-panel-common mate-polkit mate-polkit-common
  mate-session-manager mate-settings-daemon mate-settings-daemon-common
  mate-settings-daemon-pulse mate-terminal mate-terminal-common menu-xdg

Which really isn't bad. I'm installing to see how much it will mess with the Openbox session and will post back. For truly minimal, you'd want to install mate-desktop-core --no-install-recommends from a netinstall.
