Suggestions for Reducing Forum Spammers

After a user registers, make them wait a week or so before granting them access to the forums.  Maybe that will result in a reduction of the number of spammers hijacking the forums.  Or maybe require OpenID to access the forums?

Re: Suggestions for Reducing Forum Spammers

Just a thought ... a week might be rather harsh on people who are joining for help or with genuine questions or suggestions.

What's this OpenID thing and why haven't I heard about it before? --Keep in mind I'm a strong privacy advocate here...

Re: Suggestions for Reducing Forum Spammers

This was discussed in Seabiscuit's "Shiny Happy People" thread. I remember the consensus being that it would be better to just deal with spam as it arrive rather than the alternatives.

Re: Suggestions for Reducing Forum Spammers

I have suggested before, moderate new users. Some forums do this and it seems to work well.

There is usually a mod around so it would not take long for a new user to have their first post approved. This would probably get rid of 99% of the problem.

Re: Suggestions for Reducing Forum Spammers

Making people wait x number of seconds before they can post is a pretty terribad idea.

Disabling links, sigs and profile data until x happens will also be ineffective as a sole protective measure.  Their attempts to post links will be thwarted, but the scripts and humans will still be registering and posting to try.

Stopping spam is actually a very simple three part process:

1)  Akismet exists for this very reason, is free for anyone and can be written into any script you desire.  In my script, if the user is either anonymous or has less than 10 posts to their name, it's checked with Akismet.  If it's found to be spammy, it's held in moderation and invisible until I choose to either activate it or delete it.

2)  Limit editing capabilities to a reasonable timeframe(like 60 minutes) so they can't come back a week later and edit their posts to add the spam links.

3) Disable sigs for new users.  Allow them a chance to use a signature at 10 posts.  This will stop the spammer that spams through the signature.

I write this system into all my scripts that allow user input.  The latest being the social site I'm playing with.  When the bots are running, I can get hammered with thousands of submissions an hour.  So far:

Spam caught: 14,462
Spam that has made it through: 0
False Positives: 0

In my experience, hassling the legitimate user with cooldown periods, ridiculous double-captchas, asking moderators to check every post from new users or any other hoop you can invent is completely unnecessary when you go this route.

Thanks for the input, schwim.  You're such an administrator!  wink

@smacz:  I just looked into OpenID.  It's not exactly what I thought it was.  I thought one could obtain an OpenID ID and then use that to log into other sites.  You actually have an OpenID ID if you already have accounts on some web sites; i.e. Google, Blogger, a few others.

However, I'm not interested in sharing my Google, or any other account, credentials with other sites.  Additionally, there may be possible security issues as detailed at Wikipedia.  Therefore, I've decided to forget about using the technology.  I'll continue using usernames and passwords and manage all of it with KeePassX.

@schwim  Disabling editing a post after 60 minutes?  How the heck would anything get marked solved?

Re: Suggestions for Reducing Forum Spammers

I don't see what the big deal is. Once in a while someone comes in and posts half a dozen spam links, they get reported and that account is disabled. Is that really so annoying? Half the time you can tell a post is spam before you even view it, so the only reason you'd view it is to report it.

Re: Suggestions for Reducing Forum Spammers

^ That pretty damn awesome.  I hate the thought if one man can build it, another can tear it down ... change the "is_legit" code on a regular basis to a variable to be read by the script.  That would be cool.
