When running steam with native runtime it crashes when it gets to the point of spawning the "connecting" window. This is the only log output:
myusername@myhostname:~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32$ STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
Running Steam on debian 7.0 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is disabled by the user

Those last errors happen when running with steam runtime as well but it works with steam runtime.
Anyone ideas?

A very similar mutex error came up recently with some other applications. This was due to gtk changes (bl**dy GNOME ), and we had to wait for patches to fix it.
Have you just done an upgrade?
If this is the case here, it may give you a pointer for searching for a solution.
