Old Version of Terminator

The version of terminator used in CrunchBang Waldorf is 0.93-4. However, version 0.95-1 is available in the Debian Stable repo. Does anyone know why CrunchBang is using an earlier version?

Hmmm, good question KrunchTime. Perhaps there's no discernible difference and or it wasn't available at the time of Waldorf's build? I use Terminator as well and didn't know it was out of date either. Thanks

Because the crunchbang repo is rarely, if ever, updated it seems

I recommend reducing Waldorf's pinning to 500 or lower at this point if you want more recent packages in Wheezy to be installed. (Terminator is one of the few binaries that corenominal saw fit to compile from git for Waldorf, and the default Waldorf pinning keeps this from being updated to the current version in wheezy.) If you don't want to risk losing some of the custom Waldorf niceties like the slick black GRUB theme, you could pin Waldorf at 800 and preferentially install packages with wheezy as the target, e.g.

 sudo apt-get install -t wheezy terminator

AH -pvsage has got it covered already, but I'll post this anyway...

Try apt-cache policy for cases like this:

~$ apt-cache policy terminator
terminator:
  Installed: 0.93-4-bzr1026
  Candidate: 0.93-4-bzr1026
  Version table:
     0.95-1 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
 *** 0.93-4-bzr1026 0
       1001 http://packages.crunchbang.org/waldorf/ waldorf/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So the cause is the 1001 pinning that the #! packages get by default.

You can force the terminator version by running:

sudo apt-get install terminator=0.95-1

but before doing that you might want to check the changelog and see if 0.95-1 actually has any new features or bugfixes you need.

I don't use terminator so I upgraded to see what happened - the new terminator looks OK and seems to run without errors, except for this message:

/usr/share/terminator/terminatorlib/terminal.py:700: GtkWarning: IA__gtk_box_reorder_child: assertion `old_link != NULL' failed
  self.reorder_child(self.vte, 0)

which might be harmless...

... put tint2 on hold first.

sudo apt-mark hold tint2

there is a problem with it.

^ Oh, I forgot to mention: Before allowing the current version of tint2 from wheezy, you should apt-get purge tint2conf; this was from a git version of tint2 when Waldorf was new, has been folded into the mainline tint2 package in wheezy. Once tint2conf has been purged, mainline tint2 should be updated without incident.

EDIT: This first came to light when the #! repository was inaccessible due to a DDOS attack.

This seems like the best idea and I've learned something in the process. I don't want to mess up my system by lowering the pinning for the Waldorf repo. I'll do some research to find out the differences between v0.93 and v0.95 and wait to see if any other enlightening responses are provided.

@TicTac: You're welcome. I don't think non-availability is the issue as Waldorf is based off of Wheezy. If terminator is in the stable repo, then it was available when Wheezy became stable.

v0.95 (released 08/24/2010)

I installed v0.95 on one of my CrunchBang 11 installations by temporarily disabling the settings in the /etc/apt/preferences file for the CrunchBang repo. I currently don't notice any differences.
