Display manager for Janice?

So putting aside for the minute the fact that some think that a DM is bloat, what are the pros and cons of the various options out there?

Does anyone know which way corenominal is leaning?

I don't know much about the nuts and bolts of what goes on during the boot/login/start gui process, but I do like a display manager that is easy to use and is themeable.

Slim: was great from that point of view for me, but it seems that it may have died. There have been no commits for 2 yrs, and from the Arch wiki

Warning: The SliM project has been abandoned (the project homepage is down, leaving a download mirror), and is not fully compatible to systemd, including logind sessions

Lightdm: looks horrible if you need to run the gtk version, and it is very difficult to change much about it (the layout is not configurable unless you build it from source afaics). There is a webkit greeter, though, which is a possibility.

GDM: was OK in Statler, but who wants all the gnome stuff that comes with it?

MDM: Not in Debian?

LXDM: ?

Other possibilities?

Obviously I'm in the "flaming death to the DM bloat-monsters" camp, but I suppose not everyone is in love with the CLI...

I personally like the ncurses-based login scripts the bbq guys use, but they are not "themeable."

Who knows what corenominal will choose? What is Debian using?

The direct descendent of GDM 2.20 is MDM and GDM has been with CrunchBang from the beginning, so maybe something built on that code base?

^ GDM was dropped in favor of SLiM with the Waldorf release.

I like the idea of an ncurses login interface.

Slim works fine with systemd on both jessie and sid. I've had no issues with it at all.

Yes. I've been tracking testing for a while now on this pc, works fine. Upgraded to Sid today. Works fine. But if it's abandoned then I guess it's just a matter of time before it will break. But no biggie for me. I will find a way regardless. The Display Manager is pure eyecandy for me, so running without one, is out of the question

Looking at how SLiM breaks when used with systemd it appears to be only certain avoidable circumstances that cause the problem.

It matters to those who lack knowledge, competence or will to start messing with display managers. Most users don't even (need to) know or care what a DM is and does, if they find a way to log themselves in. Yes, I agree, they should, but people-people don't always do what they should.

I don't know, going the route of some cli "prompt" at login would ultimately be something regretted and may have the undesired effect of turning off new comers to this distribution in particular and even Linux in general. Lets not go the super minimal route, even at the expense of a little more bloat. Hell, I'd even go so far as to bring back the #! login sound off the iso... I miss that. CrunchBang isn't and shouldn't be considered a flavor of BBQ.

Another +1 for a terminal/cli login. startx is all you need. Perhaps including a bash script like this to choose between sessions. N00b-friendly enough .

Uh, there is an 'ideas for janice' thread though... which would indicate that such a release is probably coming. And also there's this screenshot of what appears to be Janice (although in green, haha) :

Um, yeah -- did you see when that thread started, and how much real input it has had from corenominal? And how there has been no "testing" release close to the freeze, as there was last time?

On the plus side, building a #! from Jessie is really no big deal, so carry on ...

'Scuse the double post, but a look through the list of contributors to HandyLinux seems to indicate corenominal's involvement is simply because HandyLinux happens to use some #! apps... not necessarily because corenominal has abandoned #! for HandyLinux. Of course, I may be wrong...
