Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

Cherry MX keyboards are rather nice, and depending on what you want, there's a switch for every occasion. a tactile switch, a clicky switch, a smooth switch. This guide would help 8o

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

It would be nice to have a mechanical deck again, but I doubt that will ever actually happen for me. Honestly, the prices on those are kind of crazy. I could buy a whole computer for the cost of some of them, and I actually can't afford a new computer anymore. My newest machine is ten years old. My oldest is from 1995. Realistically, I will dream about the day I can afford one of these, but the money would be put to better use on a new machine, or even a new monitor. God I hate my monitor! It's the worst monitor, ever.

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

Well it also really depends on what you do. Since I'm in a major where I'd be using a keyboard most of the time anyways, I figure why not make it pleasant? so I buy one for that.

So you could also buy a new computer for $70 let's say? if you look, they can get some nice deals sometimes  tongue

makes sense though, $500 will build you a solid linux box.  8o

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

No, but I could put that $70 toward a new computer. I have found several motherboards that cost less than that.  tongue Not that I really have room for one right now. I tend to use a computer until it is dead beyond all chance of repair. I regularly harvest parts from one to keep another going. Basically, I deal in junk!  lol People have a tendancy to give me old computers they have found in their garage and whatnot. Right now, I am using an old Dell Dimension 4550. It has a 2.4 Ghz P4, 2 gigs of RAM and I added an Nvidia 7600 AGP card. The thing that stinks about Dell is their use of non - standard PSUs but whatever. The one in this one is still going, for the moment.

I'm using the Logitech’s diNovo Edge right now.  I used to have a Kinesis Freestyle and its pretty cool that you can rearrange its pieces.

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

So I just got my first ever mechanical keyboard (WASD V2 88-key ISO with red switches) and am loving the sound. I guess my coworkers are likely to kill me soon, but well...at least I'll die having experienced typing on this thing.

Wouldn't recommend importing to Europe (Switzerland) if you don't want to pay steep customs taxes.

How high are these taxes? I know some people who live in Vietnam, & their imports are taxed 200% of the value of the item  hmm

get some O-ring sound dampeners, that'll make it a little more pleasant for your coworkers.

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

I was looking for a super cool mechanical keyboard because the keys on my laptop (the one that depends on having an outlet...it's kinda old) kept sticking. I looked around and found the Cooler Master QuickFire TK Stealth.

3/4 length keyboard with switchable numpad/homekeys. Backlit Fn, F12 Lock, and Arrow keys, and indicators for numlock, capslock, and scr lock (which I don't think I've ever seen lit).

But the best part is that the decals are on the front-facing side of the keys, leaving the tops completely blank. This is one sleek keyboard. It's my first mechanical keyboard, and much better, IMHO, than any "regular" one I've had. I love the sound of clack in the morning.

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

I have the white backlit version of that w/ MX Bronws, imo the Quickfire's are good starter keyboards.

Poker II keyboards are a little, well... let's just say get familiar with mechanical keyboards first.  tongue

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

Well for a price of ~150 $ including shipping I paid ~50 $ of import taxes and administrative charges. It's less than what I paid for the onesies I got for me and my girlfriend as a christmas present...

^ Epic, you both like those eh?

CSCoder4ever wrote:

Anyone want an RGB backlit keyboard that isn't cherry mx?

I'm not too impressed, I like my cherries! ( Though I would like to get a Buckling Spring as well... and maybe Topre when I get established ).

Also, this explains the omrons switches. ( 56k warning )

Follow up on this, I tried these switches at best buy... I don't like them.

The travel isn't very far, but oh well, I guess you have to justify some things sometimes.

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

My housemate intercepted a few old IBM Model M's that were going to be tossed in the garbage where he worked. He doesn't really like them, but knew enough to save them. I was "So if you aren't going to use those, mind if I clean one up for myself." He told be to help myself so a bit of elbow grease, some glass cleaner, and an old toothbrush had it looking and working pretty much like new and will probably outlast me. I doubt there's a louder keyboard out there, but there's also not another one that feels as good to type on as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

I have a corsair vengeance k70 and I love it. The cherry mx reds are definitely a bit irritating to use for typing sometimes, but I primarily bought the keyboard for gaming and it excels at that. It's way too noisy to even consider using it in an office where others are working, and for gaming that's what I like. I've been looking into the unicomp keyboards and considering purchasing one for use at work, namely the silenced ones with a pointing device built in. Has anyone used one of these keyboards that can comment on the noise? How does it compare to a non-mechanical keyboard? Is there another type of quiet mechanical keyboard I should be looking at instead?

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

OK, I finally have a mechanical keyboard - a Monoprice (any color Cherry MX switches you want, as long as they're blue).  A little clicky, but nowhere near as loud as I feared.

I'm now seeing a string of odd messages at boot. hmm  Here's part of it from dmesg:

[ 3.624997] input: USB Keyboard as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.0/usb7/7-1/7-1:1.0/0003:05C7:2012.0001/input/input2
[ 3.625045] hid-generic 0003:05C7:2012.0001: input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [USB Keyboard] on usb-0000:00:13.0-1/input0
[ 3.625103] hid-generic 0003:05C7:2012.0002: unknown main item tag 0x0
[ 3.625182] hid-generic 0003:05C7:2012.0002: unknown main item tag 0x0
[ 3.625260] hid-generic 0003:05C7:2012.0002: unknown main item tag 0x0
[ 3.625337] hid-generic 0003:05C7:2012.0002: unknown main item tag 0x0
[ 3.625415] hid-generic 0003:05C7:2012.0002: unknown main item tag 0x0

Is this something I should be concerned about?  Does this "generic" keyboard need a specific driver?

I wouldn't worry about, if everything works as advertised then there shouldn't be a problem hopefully  8o
