Awesome WM mouse flicker and CPU hog issue

I installed Awesome WM and love it, however I am experiencing an interesting issue where the following happens. When I use the mouse to hover over a window/tile such as terminator/chromium/firefox it will cause that process's CPU to hit the ceiling and stay there as well as X11's process. This seems to happen on all gtk apps, it does not happen on ursvt oddly enought. The mouse also flickers and it only starts when the mouse tries to disappear after a second of activity.

Any thoughts?
