the fan was jampacked with dust and the copper was croaded so i cleaned the fan and used sandpaper to increase the heatsink's surface area a bit.
it now can play hd video on the 1.8 ghz single core with out overheating however i t dose flicker so i watch 480p
it handled 1080p but was horibley unwatchable. however it didnt shut down or burst into flames so yay

I'd expect that, unless you have a really nice GPU in that machine, 480p is probably the best you can expect without glitching on that hardware...so yay is right! 8o

video card drivers installed? my overheating issues were solved after fix up the drivers. my laptop has 2 cards, and intel integrated (it's drivers where fine) and an ati radieon discrete. once i got the ati drivers working ok, i setup vga-switcheroo to allow me to toggle when which card was activated. just running the intel my heat dropped ~80%. just running the ati (with the correct drivers) my heat was decreased ~35%. maybe something to look into.

checkout powertop - a better power management scheme might help.
also have a look at lm-sensors and fancontrol.
