Want to make a Crunchbang Desktop? Read this first.

There have been a couple of these fairly recently, and it was hard to determine what the users wanted initially so, I decided to make this.

Not sure how to assemble a computer? Here is a decent how to video on how to build a computer.

Anyways, for those who want to make a Crunchbang Desktop, Give all the following information in a new thread:

----

Any Form Factor preferences or do Sizes even matter?

Want a small box? Normal box? An epic monolith box? do you even care? choice is yours!
Due to the array of cases out there, for example, there are small ITX cases or large ITX cases much like my Crunch Pro's,
please state the case size you want.

What will you be using this machine for?

State all you would be using it for.

Will you possibly play Linux games on it?

Like steam games and all that.

What is your RAM usage currently like?

Just because.

SSD, HDD, or both?

State your storage needs.

Will you need a DVD-RW Drive?

Just got to be sure.

Budget, and is the budget set or flexible?

I think the question speaks for itself.

Does that include Keyboard, mouse, and/or monitor?

State whether you got all of them, need all of them, or only some of them.

Any brand loyalty we should know about or do you even care?

Like do you like a Certain brand of Motherboards ( e.g. Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc ), RAM ( e.g. G.Skill, Patriot Memory, Corsair, etc ) Graphics cards ( e.g. Evga, MSI, Asus, etc ), power supply brands/OEMs ( e.g. Seasonic, Enermax, Corsair, etc ), Computer Cases ( e.g. Antec, NZXT, Raidmax, etc ), HDDs ( Seagate, Western Digital, etc. ), and SSDs ( Corsair, Crucial, Samsung, etc ).

any CPU and GPU brand preferences?

Like AMD or Intel for CPUs and AMD, Nvidia, or Intel for graphics.

----

This is intended for Crunchbang machines, though this could easily apply to almost any other distro as well.

if you see a way this could be improved let me know! :)

happy building!

also if something like this already exists, let me know as well!  8o

WARNING: I'm a bit bored - so going overboard a bit with what I actually "have" ... wink

Some stuff here is new, some is old ... I'd add to this machine like I do ... a little at a time:

Any Form Factor preferences or do Sizes even matter?
Went from a HUGE box to a normal box just recently

  1. - (Sentey).  450W - 2 USB - on the Mobo I have 4 more

- price was a BIG factor! However I've had it for a while now (c/w an additional 120mm fan in the back) an I really like it, love the twin fans on the side - no flashy - gaudy (opinion) coloured lights.  The old "huge" case had a clear plexiglass (thin and rattled) side with a flashing light fan dead centre of it and lights everywhere, even what looked like car headlights - first thing I did was disconnect those suckers and as many "lights" as I could.

You don't have a Motherboard section so I'll add one:
What Motherboard?  cool

- ECS - MCP61M-M3

Machine: Mobo: ECS model: MCP61M-M3 version: 7.0 Bios: American Megatrends version: 080015 date: 11/03/2010

- - needs the flash BIOS upgrade but I have no idea how to do that in Linux

What will you be using this machine for?

Lets see:

  1. email,

  2. online banking,

  3. a 'little' GIMP,

  4. a LOT of conky,

  5. coming here (web),

  6. videos | movies

... the normal stuff, nothing heavy duty, I'm retired.

Music is in the stereo to my right.

Will you possibly play Linux games on it?

Small games like sgt-puzzles (repos) and recently a couple of chess games.  I like brain-drain games.
sgt-puzzles

  1. Topological deduction games: Bridges; Loopy; Map; Net, based on FreeNet; Slant

  2. Tile manipulation games: Cube; Fifteen; Flip; Netslide; Sixteen; Twiddle

  3. Black Box

  4. Dominosa

  5. Filling, based on Fillomino

  6. Galaxies, based on Tentai Show

  7. Guess, based on Mastermind

  8. Inertia

  9. Keen, based on KenKen

  10. Light Up

  11. Magnets

  12. Mines, based on Minesweeper

  13. Pattern, an implementation of nonograms

  14. Pearl, based on Masyu

  15. Pegs, an implementation of several versions of peg solitaire

  16. Range, based on Kurodoko

  17. Rectangles, based on Divide by Squares

  18. Same Game

  19. Signpost, based on Pfeilpfad

  20. Singles, based on Hitori

  21. Solo, based on Sudoku  <<------ a favourite!!!

  22. Tents

  23. Towers, based on Skyscrapers

  24. Unequal, based on Futoshiki

  25. Untangle, based on Planarity

For my wife: pokerth and pysolfc

No "steam", no vapour not even damp games need apply!

What is your RAM usage currently like?

9% used - 547MB ( 5.85GB (6GB) ) - running:

  1. 8 conkys on three desktops:

  2. 2 x terminators

  3. 1 x thunar

  4. 1 x medit

12% - 721MB

  1. adding iceweasel c/w 6 tabs open

SSD, HDD, or both?

I have:

  1. 1 HDD - 500G - 'need' a lot less than that ... but they didn't have any 250GB HHD's when I was looking!

    • would like a least 2 more though ... greedy ... however my wallet just breaks out laughing!

    • you didn't ask --> SATA

  2. 1 - 250GB External USB HDD - used for backups and storage.

Will you need a DVD-RW Drive?

I have an LG CD/DVD-RW-RAM

  1. the RAM disc's are s·l·o·o·o·w ... but useable - with 2 800MB disc's - unheard of here.

    • every computer store I go to says "DVD-RAM disc's?  They don't exist, youre looking for DVD-RW.

    • RIGHT! They hired you off the street huh! Don't exist my butt cheeks!

DVD-RAM, OK, old technology, but so am I!

So, no, I don't need one.

Budget, and is the budget set or flexible?

  1. fixed pension - need I say more!

    • comes in at ¢'s, the 'common' kind that is.

Does that include Keyboard, mouse, and/or monitor?

State whether you got all of them, need all of them, or only some of them.
I have:

  1. LG E2342 Monitor - 23

  2. MS Internet Keyboard Pro - best keyboatd I have ever owned! 15years old

  3. MS Wheel Mouse - like the keyboard, this 15 y/o mouse has balls - I have a spare from a really OLD MS Mouse.  big_smile

  4. Kingston 5 button cordless mouse in a box, wife hates it, I love it BUT;

    • I don't like having to buy batteries all the time.

  5. Genius Spanish Keyboard - cheap shhhhh garbage!

  6. Sentey Spanish Keyboard - cheap sh... ummm ... garbage!

  7. Sentey three button mouse - cheap garbage!

Any brand loyalty we should know about or do you even care?

AMD - Nvidia - beyond that basically whatever I can get here.

What's available here is not as big a list as in other South American countries.

any CPU and GPU brand preferences?

- Preference: AMD and Nvidia graphics ... because I know them.

CPU

CPU: Triple core AMD Athlon II X3 450 (-MCP-) cache: 1536 KB flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4a svm)
           Clock Speeds: 1: 3213.965 MHz 2: 3213.965 MHz 3: 3213.965 MHz
  1. I'd upgrade to a 6 or 8 core AMD CPU (which means upgrading the Motherboard as they've changed pin settings)

See: Budget ... I'm here for a while.

Nvidia Graphics card:

Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GT218 [GeForce 210] bus-ID: 02:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:0a65
           X.Org: 1.12.4 driver: nvidia Resolution: 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: GeForce 210/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 331.20 Direct Rendering: Yes

Would somebody like to help make an Ubuntu-based version of CrunchBang? I can't develop for toffee but I am willing to pay for hosting, write instructions on the website and help put together and maybe moderate a user forum etc. I just think some people out there would want this. Unlike Viperr, Archbang, Manjarobox etc., this would really just be an Ubuntu-based version of CrunchBang. Same theming, same defaults etc.

Only one condition: that it would be called Wiggle Puppy

Here's an idea: take an Ubuntu Minimal Install image, add the #! repo to the sources, install everything that #! has, tweak the settings so it looks crunchified, copy the config files across from a regular #! install, and remaster it into an iso. This is probably not straightforward and would require relatively in-depth knowledge on what makes #! tick. However, it's possible. I think. Probably.

Well, I have managed to take a minimal Debian Jessie install before and make it fairly like CrunchBang. I would imagine that it wouldn't be such a different process to get an Ubuntu Minimal install working in much the same way... in fact, I may try and do it. If I have time. I would certainly be interested in helping with a CrunchBuntu "Wiggle Puppy" distro if I can...

Motherboard is a big part of a system, surprised that you missed it ... but stuff happens.

I saw that this thread was sitting dormant and a nice idea. So I though I'd do something about it.  big_smile

It worked ... more posts but slightly OT. I tried!

Let me get this straight. We, who follow the guidance and purpose of true #! , are wanting a rock solid stable and minimalist distro, with the efficiency and scalability to add new functions and applications; while having fun!...Right?...

Let ME get this straight, lolz: You've got a P4 w/4GB of RAM?! Did you get it like that when it was new? :-0 BC, from what I know - it would be a (true) mission, to find SDRAM these days! smile

Re: Want to make a Crunchbang Desktop? Read this first.

Well now, there was quite a bit of searching to find the right parts.
And...you are right, the original Desktop had only 512 MB of DDR RAM.
The purchases for parts were made with five different electronics vendors; but
it took more than four months for all parts to be in house.

I think it was well worth it!
