Suddenly today when I try to do a dist-upgrade then apt wants to install gnome3. I haven`t installed anything that should trigger something like this, nor do I have enabled any sources that should trigger it, and yesterday when I did a dist-upgrade everything was normal. Here is a log from yesterday. Is there anything in there that could trigger apt to want to install gnome3 in a dist-upgrade:

That would solve it for today, but I` on Sid and need to do dist-upgrades frequently. I`m not interested in any temporary solutions that just delays the unavoidable...

Solved it myself, so don`t worry. This is how, if someone run into this post and have the same issue.
"dist-upgrade" wanted to install all the gnome stuff that you see in my initial post, but a regular "apt-get upgrade" showed this:

Abort.
After checking the dependencies of the packages kept back, I solved the entire issue like this, and dist-upgrade is back at normal, as you will see in the end of this procedure...

Appreciate. Nice to see that pruning of some blue tooth items (which I do not use on box) results in a lot of superfluous items being removed. Worked for me.

Apologies, I missed that this was the testing/unstable thread (I was reading threads through the "Active" screen). Sorry for the irrelevant answer.

LOL. Yeah, it can look like that. But to keep it easy, there was 4 packages that were kept back when running apt-get upgrade. When running dist-upgrade they were not kept back, but then they triggered all those gnome-packages. So I tried installing each of the 4 manually, just to check what dependencies they had, and then I found that these two packages triggered all the gnome stuff....
# gir1.2-gnomebluetooth-1.0 gnome-bluetooth #
As I don`t use bluetooth, I removed them so that they should not trigger the gnome-stuff in dist-upgrade, and when they were removed, together with two other files that was rendered obsolete(bluez obexd-client), then I was able to manually install/upgrade the other two packages that was kept back(libsmbclient samba-common-bin), and did that because they didn`t trigger the gnome3-install. After that, I did a regular upgrade to upgrade the remaing 23 packages, and then tested dist-upgrade, and it was in sync again...
If I need bluetooth again, I will not install the packages I removed. There has to be other alternatives that doesn`t trigger the entire gnome3-enviroment...

Now you have to tackle the gtk3 problem. It is super frustrating. You cant start synaptic because of this.
Dried frog pills
As their name suggests, these are pills made chiefly from frogs, specifically the extremely poisonous ones that live in the vivarium at Unseen University and handled by the first-year students, so that if they kill one of them, not too much education has been wasted.
I use them daily!

I can start synaptic just fine. If you can not, then you probably haven`t chosen a gtk 3-8 compatible theme for the root account. It isn`t sufficient to change your theme from the menu (Settings/User Interface Settings). That changes only the theme for the user account. IN ADDITION TO THIS, you need to run "sudo lxappearance" to change the theme for the root-account.

If you like dark themes then these are what I am using:
NOX for user, and Mediterranean Dark for root

If you don`t like dark themes, but love the original waldorf theme, this is the closest you get. Just replace the current waldorf-theme, with this one: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/a6h6oewgbkf89b1/-TNeo_B-EY
If Waldorf is your current theme for both user and root, you don`t need to do anything, because then the new theme is already chosen. If you want to keep the old theme, give it another name, or back it up to another location, before you replace it with the new waldorf-theme.
Another option is to keep your current waldorf-theme, and just replace the gtk3-folder, with the gtk3-folder from the theme in the link, because there are no other differences between those two themes. The only changes are within the gtk3-folder.

I read this evening about this trick (with other themes), but didn't try it in the end cos I got round it ^^
