Re: Ideas for Janice

Just one small suggestion.  To add "Super+d  Show Desktop" to the conky.

I think it would be a useful addition to the list of shortcut keys for new users.

Except that it is common to many distros and platforms, like Ctrl-C, Alt-F4 etc. Most people would know to do it quite naturally.

When I first saw this I was wondering ... add the line in conky is easy:

geany ~/.conkyrc

like mine:

[ S ] + d${alignr}Desktop

but then I got to thinking ... that's too easy.
Is the question to add the line to conky - or to add [ S ]+d to the keyboard shortcuts?

Re: Ideas for Janice

The shortcut already exists in rx.xml. It's just that most folks don't know it is there, I think. Of course, it also hides your conkeys.

See, now I didn't know that (rx.xml), I can't find rx.xml on my system.
But how does it "hide" in conky?

My bad. rc.xml, which you probably already knew tongue. Just saying, I did not know about it, but did run across it last night while looking at the script.

Re: Ideas for Janice

Probably just stops Conky running - I found the same thing happening using i3. "Closing the window" on the initial screen stops Conky

Don't Windows users know that WinKey+D shows the desktop? It does on every win box I've used, so I tried it the first time I ran Crunchbang.

No, it doesn't hide mine tongue

Re: Ideas for Janice

@damo:  Probably a lot of Windows users don't use any of the available keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl-Esc for Start menu, Alt-Space for keyboard access to application menu, etc.) because they don't know about them.  Most of the ones in the typical CrunchBang Openbox config are similar to those in XP.

The default Conky is "own_window_type desktop"; this doesn't get hidden.  (Basically, it draws directly on the root window.)

Re: Ideas for Janice

Yeah Windows is one of the few OS's I dont pay attention to alot of the keyboard shortcuts, strangely, and that probably has alot to do with the OOTB Win8 experience.
Good info on the conkey setup. I had it set to that and was having some difficulty so changed the own_window_type to normal. It makes sense they would hide if set to normal windows  :8 . Everything seems to be working correctly now so thanks for the tip!

Re: Ideas for Janice

I wasn't going to continue because this is OT - guilty as charged - but as a suggestion for Janice's default conky:

own_window_type normal

bold mine

own_window_type
if own_window is yes, you may specify type normal, desktop, dock, panel or override (default: normal). Desktop windows are special windows that have no window decorations; are always visible on your desktop; do not appear in your pager or taskbar; and are sticky across all workspaces. Panel windows reserve space along a desktop edge, just like panels and taskbars, preventing maximized windows from overlapping them. The edge is chosen based on the alignment option. Override windows are not under the control of the window manager. Hints are ignored. This type of window can be useful for certain situations.

All my conkys use "normal" to get own_window_hints working like:

  • remove sticky from hints and start a conky on desktop #2 and that's the only desktop you see it on.

  • remove undecorated from hints and conky starts in a window with title bar and borders like other apps.

Another advantage to using "own_window_type normal" - you can right-click, centre-click on a conky to get OB Menu or Desktop Menu, otherwise it's lost real-estate.  big_smile

Re: Ideas for Janice

Another thought, I posted elsewhere but need to put in it's proper place. Can we replace hard dependency on Terminator to softer dependency on x-terminal-emulator so update-alternatives will reflect our current favorite? Will prevent a bunch of CB script breakage if implemented. well rather, will prevent script breakage should someone choose to remove terminator. Don't get me wrong, I like it but sometimes just want to play with different terminal emulators.

Re: Ideas for Janice

^^ Don't know how often I mentioned this already, but the number of d*mns given was way too low. big_smile

x-terminal-emulator would make people use their favorite terminal emulator. Imagine this: you terminal would start up in less than a second. Woah big_smile

Re: Ideas for Janice

[number of damns given intensifies]

I'm just gonna encourage it whenever I see it! big_smile I'm using terminator atm but I have used others as the default (I like xfce4-terminal). Though I've still used xterm for this and that on occasion (but not as the default).

Re: Ideas for Janice

number of damns:  add mine; x-terminal-emulator is the better option.  (I mostly use Terminator, but if I bothered to set up a proper .xresources I'd probably be running xterm for all the things, instead of just for Ranger.)

Re: Ideas for Janice

The problem is (right now) that Openbox menu.xml has terminator in it, and the syntax for 'execute' is different from x-terminal-emulator. So simply replacing 'terminator' with 'x-terminal-emulator' does not work.

So, 4 damns already, somebody else maybe? big_smile

Edit: actually is unimportant. There's no Openbox menu in Gnome 3.

Re: Ideas for Janice

^ Huh.  I didn't replace all instances in menu.xml, but the top-level one I just replaced with x-terminal-emulator and reconfigured, set xterm as x-terminal-emulator in update-alternatives, et voila.

Ya, there was something else to it but I don't remember off the top of my head.

/whispers I might be wrong but I don't think it's gonna be Gnome 3. big_smile

FWFW I have MATE, Cinnamon and Openbox on various boxen (with Blackbox as fallback on all).

Edit and Gnome 3! I just remembered that (it's on a soon to be fully retired partition/install).

Edit to add- pvsage, that's cool! It might have been an older release where it needed to be in a couple of places? And maybe a gconf config? Kinda rusty and looking at old threads isn't showing what I remember about it.
