Re: Ideas for Janice

Ref some of the above:

Keep thunar!

A touchpad disable script would be neat

updatedb/locate I use all the time, seems reasonable to have it there by default

Every time you change the login manager I've got to learn a whole new config system so I can tweak the artwork smile
(Let's see - I've themed grub, plymouth, gdm, slim. But lightdm is proving a lot more difficult!)

Re: Ideas for Janice

systemd has always been in the debian repos, it's just not the default.

I'm not sure diverging too much from the debain default base is a good idea. I always imagined #! as the debian base with some changes to the desktop side of things. A really nice default openbox, tint2, compton, and conky setup going and some fresh versions of a few packages (iceweasel for instance) but to leave the core untouched.

Then again, I am not corenominal and he can do what he wants

Re: Ideas for Janice

lightdm +1

systemd +1

Removal of pulseaudio +1

(I used to be a big fan of pulse, but since switching back to just alsa, I cannot remember why) never any need to purge ~/.pulse anymore to get sound working since switching

SpaceFM +1

Audio player is nil now and should remain the same IMO, it is just too subjective of an app

Since there already is a lot of Xfce components, xfce4-taskmanger and xfce4-appfindier would fit very nicely

d-feet, a very nice dev component for seeing what is happening in dbus/session bus

Remove Gimp and make it part of cb-welcome along with several other image editing choices (gimp inkscape mtpaint gcolor2 shotwell darktable rawtherapee gpick)

a good kernel remover

disk-manager

bum (BootUp Manager)

Re: Ideas for Janice

- a lot of people liked the Flatstudio theme. why not include it instead of one of these more old-fashioned OB themes.. I usually go with the default decoration, though..
- sorry, but the new icons are not my taste. crunchbang-Faenza was totally the icing on the cake in #! - waldorf doesnt fit on a cd anyway, so why bother for a few MB? -  these gnome icons in thunar look so dated..
- please keep thunar!
- simple scan.. it is only 1,3 mb and scanning is a nice OOTB feature

+1 for Thunar. Version 1.6.2 with tabs is pretty cool.

pulseaudio removal +1

Don't really care about filemanagers much. I'm a console cowboy smile Besides i have Dired+ in Emacs. Muhahah.

i3 / awesome / xmonad options during post-installation. I love those WM's, and from my forum-trawling thus far, it seems to be fairly popular with #!ers as well.

gimp as a post-install option

htop. It's just so much easier to read than top.

I see a lot of people are using console music players, so maybe have moc / ncmpccp / cmus as optionals in the post-install.

emacs-snapshot big_smile

Like the LAMP stack, a developer "stack" would be nice as well. Like options for installing the necessary C/C++ tools and / or ruby or python.

Option for installing TexLive / MikTex for LaTeX work.

Sure, the post-install script can / will get quite large, but I also consider the script as a way to introduce software to people, that they might not otherwise have known about. I'd be happy to help out with building it.

I do tinker with programming a bit, and maybe I could look into how a Debian style ncurses menu could be done. Mark the stuff you want and press "okie dokie Dr. Jones" and away it goes.

Just some random thoughts.

Call it Juturna wink
Ahhh - well, then it's officiel Janice... Ohh, well just a name anyway.  cry

big_smile

Hmm... Ideas...
Make the dropbox logo have egdes so you can depict it as a box? smile

Mayby a smart script before installation of new install of CrunchBang system to pick the programs you want - and let it reflect in the menu. *For advanced users*
Mayby more choices for even the leet people out there regarding which shell programs they need?
Just an idea - I do not know if it holds water.

We still haven't gotten VLC and Xchat icons made in the Crunchbang Colors BTW. Well, alot of icons regarding the programs that are with Crunchbang could have this done. Just a minor thing - but would make it even more Crunchie! smile

Il think of more.

Re: Ideas for Janice

- A nice tool for easy remastering with my custom make-up & programs & configs (I'd like to "release" a lizardbang one day...).
- A bloat-free and fast dock (optional install), perhaps plank.
- Latest staticaly linked mplayer & ffmpeg (renamed to mbangplayer and ffbangmpeg perhaps?), they should coexist with whatever is in Debian repos.
