Remastersys guidance needed

Has anybody got a good guide to Remastersys?

I would like to create a distro(let) based on Debian Sid.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

It is really pretty easy to run, the menu system explains it all and the remastersys forum is active and provides a lot of help

The real issue lies in removing the cruft to get the ISO down to a manageable size

localepurge and bleachbit will help with those

I can help with any questions you may have, it is what I use for VSIDO

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

I have remastersys running on Debian Sid  cool

I have created a 'dist' and it boots (using the Sid kernel...had some squashfs errors on boot with the liquorix kernel???)

So far so good BUT...
I am having a problem with /etc/skel and what to copy over.
If I let remastersys do this then my configs are not carried over...

I have set the following using openbox;
~/.icons copied to usr/share/icons
~/.themes copied to /usr/share/themes
~/.backgrounds copied to /usr/share/wallpapers

~/.conkyrc copied to /etc/skel (this works)
~/.tintrc copied to /etc/skel/.config/tint2 (this works)

Any help on what to copy over would be appreciated.

Right now I boot into a blank desktop with default openbox menu, default icons, default theme...ie.the default openbox setup - not mine cry
My tint2 and conky configs are working cool

So near yet so far...

As for cruft that will come in part 2 for me...

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

I am not sure what you mean by /etc/skel is not working when you let remastersys 'do this'

Whatever is in /etc/skel is copied to /home/user of the original login (liveCD) and copied to the /home/user on any install

Remastersys includes these and does nothing more.

On VSIDO, I have and depend on /etc/skel to populate everything in each install, about 44 MiB of usr data on first install

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

If you meant that having remastersys copy over your /home/user data to /etc/skel within the program, I would advise against that for may reasons...

Manually copy anything you want or need to /etc/skel... It will be far more effective and keep your personal info out of the loop should you ever want to share it

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

It is an application...

apt-cache policy localepurge

You should also have something similar to this in your remastersys config (Modify in Remastersys app)

/usr/share/doc /media /swapfile /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules /home/yourusername

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

One question;
I have the option in remastersys to change the username...default 'live'
But how do I change the hostname?
At the moment my ISO boots as 'live@live'

It is quite likely I am having another stupid day but how do I change the hostname?
I would like to have 'live@mysupernewdistro' for example...

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

^ In remastersys Modify config file make sure you have this to reduce the size... I forgot all about making sure you had this setting

  -no-recovery -always-use-fragments -b 1M -comp xz

The -comp xz is the part that will greatly reduce the size of the ISO

As far as the host name, that is done at the installer level with casper scripts

If you are referring to the LiveCD session having the hostname you want, mine appears to be controlled in

/etc/live/live.cfg

Mine looks like this:

export LIVE_USERNAME="vsido"
export LIVE_USER_FULLNAME="Live session user"
export LIVE_HOSTNAME="vsido"
export LIVE_NOCONFIGS="xinit"

Which is correct but I do not recall setting that up... big_smile

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

  -no-recovery -always-use-fragments -b 1M -comp xz

Wow! ISO is now down to 842MB using '-comp xz' cool
I also ran localepurge.

A couple of remaining problems;
1. If I edit /etc/live/config.conf to change the hostname this gets set back to 'live' after remastersys is executed.

2.I am unable to get spacefm or pcmanfm to start with my required theme icons.
They both start with a 'default'? icon set.

Thanks again for the tips.

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

I have a build environment that has /etc/hostname setup to what I want the hostname to be, and that controls the hostname on the liveCD

I see the same thing with spaceFM, and always have to go into View / Window Icon and put in the icon name I use

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

  -no-recovery -always-use-fragments -b 1M -comp xz

This is strange...
After a few minor tweaks to my setup (I only installed compton) the ISO has shot up to 1.5GB size  roll
I have tried bleachbit and a couple of remastersys runs but the ISO size remains at 1.5GB.

Any ideas on this most welcome.

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

^ Debian Live

@ chameleon I have seen this before.  Typically a reboot and redo it will correct it

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

@VastOne
Thanks...I guess as I am using the remastersys dev release on Sid I should expect a few issues...

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

^ That is what I am using...

Remember that remasterysys is just a series of bash scripts that uses debian live tools.

You must also be patient. It took me quite a while to get the size down to below 700 by removing as much as I could

I also started with a vanilla debian sid netinstall and no desktop environment and built it from there

Re: Remastersys guidance needed

I am still stuck at 1.5GB ISO size...even after a reboot and reconfig.
Ah well...patience  roll
