Re: Office suites

AbiWord has been incredibly buggy during my (limited) attempts to use it. I use LibreOffice. I have not used SoftMaker Office, but it looks very interesting and I will probably try it soon.

Re: Office suites

what i did;
a. remove current office
b. get debs from libreoffice page
c. install debs (dpkg -i *.deb)
d. cd /opt/libreoffice4.0/program and launch ./soffice or ./base, ./sdraw, ./scalc, ./swriter ...
e. add entries to your openbox menu (optional)

edit, first look:
. writer startup is really fast
. big excel generated spreadsheets still extremly slow to open (and may crash)
. looks very clunky on #!, but sligtly better than 3.5

Re: Office suites

If SoftMaker office would support .ods files, I would already have changed.

I've just downloaded and installed it, and I can confirm that you can at least open and save .odt files.

EDIT: Sorry, I read odt instead of ods...

Re: Office suites

Yep, .odt works in most recent office suites. .ods, however, seems to be difficult. The SoftMaker guys have had it "on their list" for years now.

Re: Office suites

Calligra: It's buggy for me.

AbiWord: Tried it twice and decided that it needed work.

OpenOffice: A stable and usable office suite.

LibreOffice: An amazingly nice and easy to use office suite.

MS Office: I like Powerpoint, but I HATE Word and Excel. I find it easy to use, but the problem is with .odt > .docx and so on.

SoftOffice: Haven't tried it yet but will try it soon.

FAVORITE

LibreOffice

Re: Office suites

Comparing text editors to full-featured office suites?
I seriously hope no one will take this seriously.

Re: Office suites

So why do you list Emacs, vi/Vim and nano in a thread about office suites? They are not CLI office suites.

I didn't seem to actually notice it. That is not a good answer to my question anyway.

Re: Office suites

Look, if you are not willing to tell me why you spam a thread about office suites with text editors, someone (like me) may take it as off-topic spam. Just wondering. If you don't care, I don't either.

Re: Office suites

You could as well just give a good reason...
OTOH, you really should remove it. People may become confused when they see editors and word processing side-by-side. smile

For an Integrated Office Suite it has to be Libre Office.
For Spreadsheet it would be Gnumeric, & for a Wordprocessor it would be Abiword.
For the command line it would likely depend on whether you are a vi or emacs fan, as a lot tend to use similar commands.

Agree with all of these

My ears are burning. I thought my earlier post was on topic; I make no comparison between cli and gui apps at least...
