Could someone please tell me what "gam-server" is? I ran pstree several times and, in the first instance (the above is the last) it listed gam-server. The only reference to it (that I could find) is: Gam-server and it makes no sense to me.
Also, is there anything there that shouldn't be or needn't be?

Could someone please tell me what "gam-server" is?
Like the website said, it is the running process for gamin (the website mistyped it as gemin instead). So now you ask what is gamin? Its for detecting changes in folders and files and is usually used by file managers.
BTW not to get off-topic, but on the wiki page for gamin, I just noticed the CrunchBang logo. Apparently any Unix-related stubs have it.

I don't know why systemd is running twice. Cron, rsyslog, wicd could be stopped, if *wanted*.

It's simply a "tree" of all the processes that are running. As you can see, all processes belong to the one you use to boot your computer with, either "init" or "systemd".
├─login───bash───startx───xinit─┬─X
│ └─dwm─┬─conky───4*[{conky}]
│ ├─redshift
│ └─sh
Means that from login, bash is started. From bash, startx is run. From startx, xinit is run and from xinit, X is run. Also, we see another branch fork from xinit, which means that startx also started DWM. DWM in turn, started conky, redshift and sh.

Please use thumbnails (please try to avoid the large thumbnail imgur.com code) linking to the larger image to help those of us with slow connections. An example of the code needed is below. Most image hosting sites will automatically generate this for you as well. Users have been using postimage.org lately which does a nice job.
Thanks for the site VastOne.
