That's the fun part of Linux, you can experiment and try out all sorts of distro/WM/DE wink

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

Yep, and I swear, there's like a never-ending assortment of them! There haven't been too many distro releases to hop between (I mostly test them in virtual machines these days--saves my discs, money and data/partitions), but it seems like the window managers make up for it.  I'm also starting to really like euclid-wm--it seems like it would be great on an old machine, with little power and no mouse, used on occasion for some simple, basic work where shiny graphics would get in the way.  I still need to give subtle-wm a better look, and herbstluftwm seems pretty decent too but again that one also needs further review...

I tried getting musca compiled from source, both on the host system and in a Debian 7.0 virtual machine, but I just couldn't get it to install. sad Oh well...

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

After FINALLY reading this reviews now Im feeling like "I discovered America". From the beggining I knew that Linux means freedom and choice but I had never imagined for such a choices... I was holding on 2 DE's - Mate and LXDE, I had tried KDE and GNOME but I had never heard about WM's. Thanks to #! Linux I discovered this "things" and specially OpenBox but I never imagined that there are so many WM's out there...

Thank you for opening my eyes, 2ManyDogs! That thread must live! Now if we expect 30 desktop enviroments in 30 days that will be... yikes  But of course they're not so many. smile

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

OK got the basics of it working. This way:
apt-get install jwm
sudo nano /etc/slim.conf
changed sessions line to include ,jwm
logout, then hit F1 to cycle between openbox and jwm

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

This is a fantastic thread. I think I will try jwm again after the glowing comments posted above. I'm looking for a wm that is fast fast fast on my Dell 3000. The current default version of #! still lags on that machine and I am trying to make it as lean as possible without resorting to the terminal only scenario (not that there is anything wrong with that smile)

Another suggestion is maybe to add FM's (File managers to this thread or maybe start another one called 30 File Managers in 30 days or something like that. I really think you are on to something 2ManyDogs. I for one am glued to this thread and all that I am learning as a newbie!

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

Just want to say that I'm using cwm on one of my workstations and I really like it. Very light and fast, just what I needed.

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

thank you very much 2ManyDogs! Fantastic job! I was not aware about the tiling ones and I am loving scrotwm.

As a windows user, I spent endless hours tweaking the menu, taskbar, themes and etc. As an openbox user I would change window decoration I believe every 2 days and edit the menu.

Now with tiling + dmenu I actually started doing some work on my pc tongue

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

I should download the zip instead of taking the .tar.gz as linked to in the README. It is having an issue with freetype v. freetype2 library paths.

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

The problem: The most interesting WMs are pointless to review at this level of detail. Most Lispy ones and a few others (e.g. FVWM) are so open-ended that a true test would be "I've been using them for a few months, behaviour I want is xyz, this is how easily/cleanly I could implement it, and those are the horror stories from when I screwed up".

LEGO won't be ready for the average user until it comes pre-assembled, in a single  unified look, and glued together so it doesn't come apart.
