Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

A noob question for 2ManyDogs or any DWM user out there..

If you install the version in the stable repo can you still edit the config.h file and re-build?

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

^ yes, but you also need to "apt-get source dwm" and then you're still stuck with the older version. You'd really be better off installing mercurial and using that to get the current source (it's not hard, just follow the directions on the mercurial web site) or downloading the tarball from the suckless site and using that (even easier, but a little less secure and you can't get updates that way).

Start bugging gensym to start a "building from source" thread smile

^ hey, if it's not broken don't try to fix it! scrotwm is a fine minimal window manager.

And it is just because your insane thread here that I have the desire to play again with it. No pure WM can have my interest these days but Scrotwm and DWM.

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

^OK, this is what /etc/apt/sources.list looked like before:

## CRUNCHBANG
## Compatible with Debian Squeeze, but use at your own risk.
deb http://packages.crunchbang.org/statler statler main
# deb-src http://packages.crunchbang.org/statler statler main

## CRUNCHBANG MULTIMEDIA
## Debian Multimedia Mirror
deb http://packages.crunchbang.org/statler-mm squeeze main non-free
# deb-src http://packages.crunchbang.org/statler-mm squeeze main non-free

## CRUNCHBANG MOZILLA
## Debian Mozilla Mirror
deb http://packages.crunchbang.org/statler-mozilla squeeze-backports iceweasel-release
# deb-src http://packages.crunchbang.org/statler-mozilla squeeze-backports iceweasel-relea$

## DEBIAN
deb ftp://mirrors.melbourne.co.uk/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free

## DEBIAN SECURITY
deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
# deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main

I uncommented the 'deb-src' line:

## DEBIAN
deb ftp://mirrors.melbourne.co.uk/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free

and then ran:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get build-dep dwm

but i get the following:

E: Ignore unavailable target release 'statler' of package 'dwm'
E: Unable to find a source package for

EDIT: corrected typo should have read build-dep vice build-deb.

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

@2ManyDogs et all...
Does DWM generate it's own .desktop file?
As i went through the process by 'el_k' with the addition of changing my /etc/apt/sources.list as per foxys post and DWM does not appear in the GDM sessions list so I checked and there is no .desktop for it. sad
Don't see anything in your review so I though it did, so has something gone wrong?

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

kri,

sudo touch /usr/share/xsessions/dwm.desktop
gksudo geany /usr/share/xsessions/dwm.desktop

Paste in:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=DWM Session
Comment=Use this session to run DWM as your desktop environment
Exec=/usr/local/bin/dwm
Icon=
Type=Application

????
Profit!

Re: 30 Window Managers in 30 days

el_koraco..  Thanks, that did the trick.:D
Just need to figure out how to get my Wifi working now but I guess that's just a case of creating a startup script for nm-applet. I should probably start another post for any more problem as well, perhaps a getting started with DWM thread.
