Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

A crap desktop that was creeping on Win, went better with DE distros and happens to fly with #!  tongue

CPU:  2X Intel Celeron E3400 @ 2.6 GHz
Mobo: Asus P5G41T-M LX
RAM: 4 GB ... whatever. Never bothered to check what is it.
GPU: Nvidia Quadro FX1500
HD: Two... (no idea) internal. Plus an external USB backup HD.
Monitors: Hanns-G HSG 1041 22" + Samsung SyncMaster T220HD 22"
PSU: 420W Noisy as hell. Cannot remember the brand
Case: Just one.

Saving for a new better desktop with real DAW capabilities. Surely based on an AMD FX8350 CPU. Will be around here soon. Probably triple boot. Two of the OSs will be #! One all-purpose install and a dedicated "DAWbang!" with KXStudio on top (part of it actually). The third one will be a tweaked AV Linux 6.0.2 remaster.

I'll keep this current crappy desktop for distro tortures and testing. A much better box than VirtualBox.

Nice. It's my alternative to the FX8350 if its price keeps going down and the AMD FX keeps growing up as they currently are.

Why do you need such power? Audio editing or something?

Dried frog pills
As their name suggests, these are pills made chiefly from frogs, specifically the extremely poisonous ones that live in the vivarium at Unseen University and handled by the first-year students, so that if they kill one of them, not too much education has been wasted.

I use them daily! tongue

I bought my first notebook yesterday. A used Lenovo Thinkpad T60 with Windows 7.
I installed #! on it and it runs great in dual boot (dual boot for the moment... in the future I'll go #! only).
These are some specs:

Lenovo Thinkpad T60
CPU: Intel Centrino Duo T5500
HDD: 40 GB

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

I only have #! installed on my small notebook. My work notebook (W8), MacBookPro (OS X 10.* & W7) and desktop (W8) have not and with the exception of a VM on my work notebook probably will not get the honor of running #!.

Name:  Lenovo ThinkPad X220
Processor: Intel Core i5 2540M @ 2.6 GHz
Screen:  12.5" HD (1366x768)
HDD:  240 GB Samsung SSD

Other:  3 x USB2.0, Fingerprint Reader, Card Reader

Comments: Everything works pretty much as it should. The usual Intel wireless firmware hack was needed.

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

Ok, I have several machines in the house running linux on, but only two of them are currently running #! the rest are running Arch with specialized setups and no monitors connected to them.

First Machine
Model:Inspiron 1525
CPU:Pentium D 2.86Ghz
RAM: 2GB shared with graphics controller
Graphics:Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Screen:15" 1280x800 widescreen
Network:Broadcom BCM4312 902.11b/g wireless
        Marvell PCI-E Fast Ethernet Conroller
Optical:dvd r/w
Card Reader:Richoh R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro
USB: 4x usb 2.0 slots
Misc:HDMI and VGA ports

Everything works out of the box after install with zero tweaking. Adding "syndaemon -d" to startup in order to disable touchpad while typing worked perfectly. Machine is extremely responsive and easy to use.

Second Machine
Model:Optiplex GX520
CPU:Pentinum 4 3.2Ghz
Graphics:ATI RV280
         Integrated Intel Onboard Graphics
Screen:19" 1680x1050 Viewsonic
Sound:Intel 82801G AC'97 Audio controller
HDD:500GB sata
Network:Realtek TRL-8185 802.11 a/b/g Wireless
        Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5741 Gigabit Ethernet
Optical:Two dvd r/w drives
USB:6 rear 2 front
Misc:USB Brother Laser printer setup as network printer

Had to disable intel frame-buffer support to allow booting with ATI GPU installed, so I installed the system without the ATI graphics card, set the grub boot argument and then installed the card to get everything working properly. From there everything else worked out of the box including the printer once printer support was installed after first boot. Added SSH server configuration for remote administration as this is my wife's computer. Installed chrome and libreoffice as well as some extra utilities. She's never had any problems with using it. She never used linux before I setup her computer with #! on it and I didn't give her any tutorial simply told her to play with it. She's figured out on her own how to navigate, and use many of the features of it. She doesn't do any administration or program installing on it as she's never had a need to do so since everything was pretty well there out of the box plus the very few things I added to it. She's a happy camper and is much happier with #! than she ever was with MS Windows. She even wonders why people say that linux is complicated because she finds it so easy for what she does. #! was the best choice of distro I could have made for her. This machine is also extremely responsive.

I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own image.
