The Intel chips are at the same time difficult because their OpenGL support is incomplete, and convenient because they have a good set of open source drivers for Linux.  You should be able to get glx acceleration with that card.

It would help to know which drivers you have installed and also which ones are getting used.  The first page of output from glxinfo is useful information, as is the first page or so from xdpyinfo.  /var/log/Xorg.0.log will give you complete information about the drivers and modules loaded for your graphics card.

Version information for installed packages of xserver-xorg-video-intel, anything you have starting libdrm, and libgl1-mesa*.

That should keep you busy for a while smile  With recent versions of the correct drivers, I wouldn't worry too much about xorg.conf for now.  There may be options you want to set later, but a default configuration should work.

Sweet.  It says it right there in the log.  The driver being found for glx is actually an nVidia driver.  Further down it shows that this failed to initialise (duhh!!!).  Actually not so duhh, I once had an nVidia GLX driver running with an Intel card but it didn't work too well.

Usually this is caused by an old symlink, but probably not in this case.  Look in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/ and see if that is the case.  Also take a look in /usr/lib and see if there is anything with nVidia in the name that is symlinked linked to (libGL is a common one).  Symlinks are replaced every time you installed a new package by linking each driver to the newest "version", so you'll have to get rid of any offending files.

If no symlinks, then the driver itself may be the wrong file.  I think this file comes from the nvidia-glx package, which you should remove assuming you don't have any nVidia cards.  It is also in one of the xorg packages, perhaps xserver-xorg-core, but I think replaced by a different package name in new versions.  You can use the --reinstall option with apt-get install on an already-installed package to refresh any files that are missing or damaged.

I found this this symlink where you suggested (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/):

Now I dont know what to do with this - but it does seem I have a lot nvidia things installed (including the glx package). But can I just purge them all?

You might want to check that you have a command line session with networking available before you go any further smile  Rearranging graphics drivers can leave you without a desktop.

Are you sure you don't have an nVidia card?  I'd get rid of all that nVidia stuff first.  Possibly there are some compiled drivers too, but they are tough to get rid of unless you can find the source and the makefile that installed the,.  So long as they aren't getting symlinked, a few spare drivers lying around won't hurt.

Once you purge those packages, see what you have to replace that libglx.so link.  If nothing, then try reinstalling your xserver-xorg packages.  You might have quite a lot but the keys ones are xserver-xorg-video-intel and the obvious ones like xserver-xorg-core and others with shorter names.

Probably everything will be fine once you get that symnlink pointing to the right driver.  You can also check your kernel modules.  Should be the i915 for you card, I think, and probably also /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so.  There are many more, but if those are loaded you should be up and running.  Check out some games or just glxgears will give you an idea whether acceleration is working.  Your card should be able to draw hundreds of frames a second in glxgears and tens of fps in simpler games.

Before I go ahead:

My graphics card is derived from:

 lspci | grep VGA  

which yields:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Also: Would it be better to remove and not purge? If something goes wrong it would be easier to reinstall if I only removed first?

Either way.  There's not much difference in the case of these nVidia driver.  I'm not even sure that removing the packages will remove the drivers, because they are often just a source package that gets automatically built and installed after it is unpacked.  That's why they are so often left lying around afterwards,  You might still need to delete the libglx.so manually if it won't go away.

just a little update - since this is my main work computer - I haven't got around to adressing this problem yet. But it is on my today list and I am very thankfull for the help Iann has provided. I hope I will get it done in the next weeks. - hope you will still be there - helping my restore desktop should everything go crunch bang!

Okay - a small update: I finally got around to purging *nvidia*. Everything seems to work now. I can use gephi again - and some of my youtube problems has also vanished.
