Not to burst your bubble, but I believe the community's Care-O-Meter is at 0 on that.

That's very funny...but, snark is easy on the Internet, isn't it smile

#3 Tips, Tricks & Scripts » Changing terminal titles for man, less and vi » 2015-07-07 21:12:20

Here's a script I wrote that's pretty useful if you pop open a lot of terminals to check out man pages, edit config files, etc.

#!/bin/bash
# Sets terminal title for programs which use an alternate screen buffer
# such as man, vi and less. See XTERM(1)
# With other commands, title with be overwritten unless PS1 is changed in
# $HOME/.bashrc

BIN=$1
shift

OPTS=''
while [ $# -gt 1 ] ; do
    OPTS=$OPTS" $1"
    shift
done

TARGET=$1

case "$BIN" in
man )
    PROGRAM="Manual Page"
    ;;
vi )
    PROGRAM="Editing in Vi"
    ;;
less )
    PROGRAM="Viewing with Less"
    ;;
* )
    PROGRAM=${BIN}
    ;;
esac

echo -en "\033]0;${TARGET} - ${PROGRAM}\a"

$BIN $OPTS $TARGET

I named the above xterm-star for "set title and run". Place the above code somewhere in your bash path, then create the following aliases in .bashrc

alias man='xterm-star man'
alias vi='xterm-star vi'
alias less='xterm-star less'

One last thing I did was change the default prompt in .bashrc from

PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;32m\]\u\[\033[00m\]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00m\]\$ '

to

PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\w\$ '

Here's a screenshot with 5 terminals open and 2 minimized. Without the change in titles each title would be the same.

I came here in good faith and don't appreciate people jumping on me. I suggest some of the guys around here with their 3k posts should be censored a bit for being so unfriendly to newcomers.

Refering to these two threads:

Thank you very much

well, guys, I came to this forum because I used Crunchbang for many years. now I spent a couple of months learning the ins and outs of installing Debian. so, I post in the forum titled "Ideas and Suggestions". I had two ideas...use Fluxbox instead of Openbox and use PCManFM instead of Thunar. so I made two threads...one for each idea.

I have other ideas too, based on my recent experience...like trying to minimize the number of programs that depend on GTK3.0, since the resizing doesn't work too well in Openbox and not at all in Fluxbox.

anyway, bottom line, I came here and created two threads. it's not like I'm posting all around the forums in every section. I'm not even trying to bounce my threads, because I really don't care too much. I thought I would come and contribute a little, but I guess the forum Nazis and Nurse Ratched's around here have decided god knows what...it's too bad, because I wanted to contribute and I was thinking of posting in the "tips and tricks" or even a tutorial and there are some bright people here, but you guys @KrunchTime and @damo are downers  sad

In terms of openbox being more actively developed than fluxbox:

@KrunchTime I have no idea what you are talking about

Thanks damo and LabRat

Its true that the problems I had with thunar were with ntfs, on the other hand pcmanfm doesn't seem to have this problem. Overall, I like thunar's interface better but pcmanfm handles drives and such better...for example, pcmanfm recognizes my camera no problems

btw, what's up with these smartass remarks? I just joined to board to contribute...geez!

last time I used thunar, I moved two jpgs from one folder to another on a usb stick, opened the folder and I had two zero byte files! This was after massive problems copying to an external hard drive where I had to redo everything with rsync.

but, just a suggestion smile

Thanks everyone for the replies and the links. I used Openbox on Crunchbang for years and loved it. Man, when it was said that vanilla Debian is as easy as Crunchbang, I doubt that! I've spent months working out the odds and ends of installing Debian Jessie and kind of miss that one-CD-install Crunchbang offered.

That's a super nice screenshot smile

#12 Re: Ideas & Suggestions » How about Fluxbox instead of Openbox for BunsenLabs » 2015-06-28 23:35:11

thanks for the reply porkpiehat.

apt-get is really great..."apt-get install xdm" and voila! everything works..."apt-get remove xdm", "apt-get install lightdm" and now that works  smile

openbox has nice gui tools...lxappearance, obmenu, obconf

#13 Re: Ideas & Suggestions » How about Fluxbox instead of Openbox for BunsenLabs » 2015-06-28 23:08:14

Well, right now I have a Debian stable install and I am running Fluxbox, so I'm fine.

#14 Re: Ideas & Suggestions » How about Fluxbox instead of Openbox for BunsenLabs » 2015-06-28 22:56:40

Well, BunsenLabs could be a "Debian Stable + Fluxbox" distro

Updating to Jessie, thunar would silently lose data on external media, so I switched to pcmanfm...also, could use spacefm

I used Openbox on Crunchbang for years and was very happy with it. But, having to install Jessie myself, I've discovered that Fluxbox is much easier to configure and has much, much better local documentation (man pages) than Openbox. Hiding the toolbar and running tint2 gives the same look and feel.

Also, it might be nice to have a preconfigured tiling manager - xmonad, i3, notion, etc

EDIT: also, how about losing all gtk3.0 apps! can't resize them on the different *box wm's
