#1 Ideas & Suggestions » Intel 2100b wifi cards and hidden network settings » 2015-08-09 15:50:23

My home network variables are: Hidden network SSID and WPA2-PSK AES.

My test laptop: Thinkpad R50e (actually a TR4050e...mixed parts Thinkpad) with Intel 2100 wifi card

I tested four distros:

  • #! Waldorf

  • bunsenlabs alpha

  • #!++

  • Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon

Findings: Only #! Waldorf and Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon would connect to my home network successfully.

I spent yesterday trying to find a solution online (including two re-installs of BL) and did not succeed. Suggestions soon became a bit too convoluted for me and beyond my linux capabilities.

To the developers- if it is not too much to ask if someone could take a look into this it would be very much appreciated. I've had #! on this older Thinkpad for years now and it worked great! I really liked what I saw in BL and hope it plays well with my old Thinkpad in a future release. Cheers!  smile

#2 Re: Help & Support (Other) » BunsenLabs alpha 32-bit and Intel 2200bg » 2015-08-08 22:48:04

Well not sure what is going on. I followed the steps provided by and still no luck.

I used

lsmod | less

to get a list of current loaded modules and see ipw2200 in the list. It also shows it is 'Used by' 0 in the list.  I rebooted and attempted to connect with my router and still am not successful. Upon entering in my network name, type of wifi security, and my password the wireless icon begins spinning then shows 'Disconnected. The network connection has been disconnected.' Any other suggestions?

Well. Tried a reinstall and no luck once again. Off to try #!++

EDIT: 08/09/2015

Same story on #!++

Interestingly I have Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon on USB and just gave that a try and my wifi worked. What I had forgot to mention was that my network SSID is hidden so perhaps that may have something to do with the issue I was having with BL and #!++

I also goofed on my wifi card type- it is an Intel 2100 model :8 Still I had no issues connecting to my router with Hidden and WPA2-PSK AES settings with the older Waldorf and the more recent LM 17.2 Cinnamon.

Hope things work out better with either distro (BL and #!++) and my Thinkpad in the near future!

I have an older Thinkpad which uses an Intel 2200bg wifi card. BL recognizes the card however it will not allow me to connect to my WPA2-PSK AES encrypted router connection. With my previous #! installation I was able to successfully connect with my router using WPA2-PSK AES. Not sure why BL makes an attempt at connecting then suddenly drops the connection.

I was not sure where to post for assistance hence my posting in 'Help & Support (Other).' Anyone who could offer any assistance?

Whoops just saw a subsection dedicated to BL. Please move to appropriate thread if possible. Thanks!

#4 Help & Support (Crunchbang 11 "Waldorf") » Installing latest qpdfview » 2014-12-25 16:19:20

Hi all. I enjoy using my older Thinkpad with #! loaded on it. My question is how do I get the latest version of qdfview installed on my #!? According to lsb_release a- I am running Debian 7.7 Wheezy. I managed to get an older version of qpdfview 0.3.1 installed but it is lacking the controls to annotate PDFs. I have the latest version 0.4.12 installed on my Chromebook w/Crouton and I find that version preferable to 0.3.1.

Could anyone assist me? Thanks!

Actually uninstalling stopped the continuous ASCII prints smile

I readded my printer and added it back into my google print. Tested it a print job and it is working fine again. Now I remember the details- I had used Kingsoft Office on my android tablet which might have something to do with the issue. I will most likely uninstall Kingsoft office as I do not use it on my tablet anyway. Sometimes backtracking through typing gets the cogwheels moving for myself  roll   big_smile

#6 Help & Support (Crunchbang 11 "Waldorf") » Printer keeps printing the same ASCII-type pages » 2014-08-24 15:05:28

Hi guys/gals! I turned an older R50e ThinkPad into a printserver for my Brother HL-2240 printer. I am running CB Linux 11 Waldorf on the R50e and am using google print for the cloud printing service. My list of devices that share this service include a desktop, 3 laptops, and an android tablet. The problem is that I tried sending a print job via my android tablet which resulted in the neverending cycle of ASCII pages being printed. What I have done so far is uninstall the printer from google print and also uninstall the printer from CB. The wonky pages have stopped printing but where does the issue lie? I log onto my google account associated with the printer and there are no jobs there. I am not sure how to proceed and any help would be appreciated.

#7 Re: CrunchBang Talk » Everybody loves stickers! » 2014-01-09 16:30:24

Got my stickers in the mail and here is my old-yet-new-to-me TR4050e (long name which I will explain in a second).

I received the laptop from a friend who was thinning out his collection of laptops. He replaced the motherboard from a T40 with one from an R50e. Runs very cool, fast, and stylish (in a black-bento-box-2010-monolith kind of way wink ).

Thanks to OP 'monkey of rage' for the stickers!!!

#10 Help & Support (Crunchbang 11 "Waldorf") » The ubiquitous 'forgot username and passwd' post >.< (SOLVED) » 2014-01-05 19:05:10

Hi everyone,

Embarrassingly I forgot my password and username since the last time I posted on here ~2 weeks ago. I am not terribly proficient in recovery so if anyone could walk me through the steps to retrieve my username and password I will be greatly appreciative! Right now I am not too sure what I did but I typed 'root' into the 'Username' field and then the password I had reset my root user for (not quite sure how else to explain it).

So I have a blank screen however when I right click I can access:

Terminal emulator
Web Browser
Debian-> applications, games, Help, Screen, Window Managers

It appears to be a generic debian desktop(?) I am also able to web surf on this stripped down mode.

Are the stickers still available? I have a clean canvas (sticker free laptop) that sure could use a #! sticker  wink

#12 Re: Help & Support (Crunchbang 11 "Waldorf") » Boot directly into #! » 2013-12-17 06:49:43

Well I am now typing on the new install of #!

My how things have changed! I was surprised when a script for updates appeared! Not only did it ask (politely) but it updated things for me when I typed 'Y' What is nice is that the R50e is pretty much ~9 years old and yet this distro is running very well so far! Going to spend a little time now getting refamiliar with #! and see what else is new!

Let's see if I remember how to customize conky to my liking  wink

#13 Re: Help & Support (Crunchbang 11 "Waldorf") » Boot directly into #! » 2013-12-17 05:52:44

Well tried a couple of things and I was not successful. I am reinstalling crunchbang now. Not a biggie I suppose as the previous installation was a fresh one as well. Took note of things more carefully this time :8 Thanks for your input!

It's been a good while since I've been in here! So what brings me back around is that a friend of mine was going to throw an old R50e out into the garbage however I saved it and needs an OS. I thought of crunchbang and how well it worked for me in the past. I did a live run first and things worked out well! I then installed the latest 32-bit Waldorf and at some point during the installation I was asked to create a username and password. I was in the middle of texting when I entered in a name and then a password. I remembered the username but the password I was not sure of. I tried a couple of ones I usually rotate with but no luck. Is there some way I could reset the password w/the livedisc? I wish to avoid reinstalling at this point. Thanks smile

ps. also is there a way I could set things so I do not have to enter in a user name and password? I would be the primary user and I do not have any plans to keep confidential items in the R50e. If I could set it so that it could boot directly to desktop that would be a plus!

#22 Re: Devel: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" » No Sound on Old Thinkpad 390X » 2010-04-13 18:29:12

Out of curiosity I just downloaded Statler Alpha XFCE 32-bit and am running it off a liveCD on an old ThinkPad 600X I've put up for sale.

Things seem to work. The Intel 2100B (I installed this in place of the 56k modem and ran the antennae up behind the LCD) connects to our WPA-PSK router and I'm connected to this forum with it.. however there is no sound for me also.

If the sound could be fixed this would be very nice for this! I don't know how much longer I'll have this 600X however I'm curious as to how one would fix the sound. I do get a box that says "Gstreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific Gstreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permission problem."

I've been barely using this for a couple of minutes now and it's quite impressive big_smile

I was wondering if a

sudo apt-get update

followed by a

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

would solve the sound problem??? I did notice that there was over 100mb of updates ready.

#24 Re: Off Topic / General Chat » printers-scanners-copiers » 2010-04-09 19:11:01

Hi omns.

The driver selection is a little vague. There are no Pixma drivers. The closest thing I see is the BJC-4000 and when I search engine that I get a totally different looking printer than what I have. I'll give that cups-gutenprint driver... how do I proceed? I'm not terribly fluent in Linux so bear with me smile

#25 Re: Off Topic / General Chat » printers-scanners-copiers » 2010-04-09 18:51:49

I'm having trouble finding drivers or a way to get my Canon Pixma ip4000 to work.

Any suggestions???
