Hi - great news, I just got my subscription of Linux Format for next month and there's a front-page mention and a full page review (8/10) for Crunchbang. Congrats to Philip and everyone else involved - this distro is really on the march!

I really like LXF, but being in the states, I have a hard time justifying paying over $100 for a magazine. I will try to get to Barnes and Noble to pickup the one with #! on it. What isthe issue number for it?

I don't blame you, I find it hard to justify the cover price of £6.49 even if it DOES come with a DVD.
I'm sure someone will ENTIRELY LEGALLY OF COURSE *cough cough* scan a copy of the article for you.

lol. I took out a 2nd mortgage last year to buy a couple of issues too.
I always thumb through it and have to really justify the 13 bucks they want for it up here. But rest assured the issue featuring #! will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.
ps. TopGear and Car are the exact same too.. very pricey. Their production quality is miles above most US car magazines though. I've never been entirely sure how they justify it business-wise. But I don't complain. Buying expensive British magazines is one of my guilty little pleasures.

Of course, that someone would also need to know where to send that *cough cough* entirely legal scan to someone in the USA who was struggling to justify forking out $100 for a magazine

i will definitively get me a copy!

Is it in the 'Virtualise Now' edition with the Tux dolls on the cover?
I will go and get my own copy, no need for anyone to break the law for TOTALLY LEGAL SCANS of copyrighted material.

I just loooked in the back of an issue I have.
If it costs you that much for one issue, wouldn't it be worth subscribing, since the quoted price from the publisher is $128?

No, it is the KDE issue on sale 5 Feb.
I thought the review was a little unfavourable. It acknowledges the aspiration of a 'speedy minimalist distro' but then mentions annoyances like the appearance of Ubuntu in the grub menu rather than Crunchbang and the greyscale desktop colouring rather than the caramel (brown) of Ubuntu. Rather than picking on such relatively minor points I would have been happier if they had praised the amount of work that Philip had gone through to make this what it is. It is clearly a labour of love for an individual rather than a product of a dedicated team of hackers and should at least, I feel, been seen as a pretty huge achievement. Who knows where it could go? Just look at what Clem acheived with Linux Mint.
Crunchbang may not be perfect but it is more than good enough for anything I am likely to do in the near future. Regardless of the review it will remain my distro of choice for sometime to come.

Oh I so so wish that Linux Format would show up on Google books just like Maximum PC magazine does. In full view no less: http://bit.ly/9pUF
Not sure how the hell they've made this work with publishers but there is quite a lot of very neat stuff over there.

Incidentally, if you subscribe you can get the price down to around a more reasonable £5 per issue.

It does mention a couple of very minor negative points (don't all reviews?) but overall the review is very positive - it gives #! 8 out of 10, after all.

I agree that overall the review was positive I just felt that the negative points bordered on petty.
Hey, at the end of the day, it is just my opinion rather like the reviewer had his.

Can I take credit for LXF's awareness after my published letter mast month?
Is #! on the coverdisc?
Offline
It's not on the cover disc but does tell you where to get it.

Maybe next release?
I'm sure a lot more people would be prepared to give it a go, if it's right there on the disk. I know personally I've tried a few distros simply because they've been to hand on the CD.
Anyway people, keep writing in to LXF/LJ and let them know what a great distro this is - they did say in the previous issue that they would write more about it if people showed an interest, and they've been true to their word so far!

Did anyone else notice the slight typo in the article? "...or opening up Firefox by pressing Super+F". If you look really closely at the screenshot at the top right of the article, you can see the defaults which of course make that the shortcut for the file manager!
All in all a little disappointed with the slight negative slant and I agree with greenguru about this being a huge achievement! But all in all, some good exposure!

to play the devil's advocate, they obviously don't really care that it's a one-man project... they're reviewing it for usability's sake, and they found a few nagging problems. nothing to get worked up over; it's amazing how much has been accomplished with this distro in such a short time, but it IS a review

Hey!
Before people feel the need to go scanning articles and such, you'll be pleased to know that the entire article is available online at a new Linux Format-backed website: www.tuxradar.com - see http://www.tuxradar.com/content/crunchbang-linux-hands for the story.
"I have a hard time justifying paying over $100 for a magazine"
Then you'll be glad to hear that if you listen to the first episode of our new podcast (http://www.tuxradar.com/content/podcast … -episode-1) you'll find out how to get a year of Linux Format for just $99. I believe that's just under your threshold
"Can I take credit for LXF's awareness after my published letter mast month?"
Yes, you can - I honestly hadn't heard of it before your letter landed in the inbox, and I went to the site to learn more, then commissioned the review straight afterwards.
"Is #! on the coverdisc?"
I'm afraid not, and it's not likely to be either - the inclusion of proprietary bits and pieces such as DVD playback could potentially put us in line for trouble in the courts. When people aren't making any money of the software, which is basically what the community does, there's little point suing; but as we're a big company with ample coffers ripe for the taking if we slip up, we prefer to play it safe.
"I just felt that the negative points bordered on petty."
There were two points you picked up on: the near-monotone colour scheme and the use of Ubuntu in Grub. With respect to the first one, the review said "Once your eyes have become accustomed to the lack of colour, it becomes quite soothing to look at" - I don't think that's really so negative. As for printing the wrong distro name in Grub, I think that's a legitimate glitch to mention.
"But all in all, some good exposure!"
Isn't the adage, "all press is good press"?
Anyway, do keep us updated with news - you guys are actually doing something unique in the distro world, and we'd be happy to cover it more. Perhaps Philip might like to do an interview?
Take care,

I'm from Denmark and are a happy subscriber of LXF.
You guy's are doing a fantastic job, and the highlight of the month is when LXF are dumped into my letterbox !!
Please make a PM to Phillip, his forum name is corenominal I'm pretty shure that he wouldn't mind doing a interview with you
Thanks,

I listened to it last night on my commute home. Good job guys! Very well done. I like the fact that you've aimed a little bit at getting some opposing opinions going on issues (kinda sorta one of the things I enjoyed so much about Lugradio). It was a very enjoyable listen - so much so that I blogged about it too.
