keymap

keymap doesn't work

sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration won't fix my keymap
i have to setxkbmap us manually every time
i select Asus Laptop
i select USA and USA or euro on 5 and still i get " on alt+2 instead of @

Same here, on a desktop PC, standard keyboard.
Except I didn't know about setxkbmap, so I couldn't access my truecrypt partition, 'cause I couldn't type the characters used in the password!  mad
!@#$%^&*()_+, yeah!

Hope someone knows a cleaner fix to this, though.
(And no, xfce4-keyboard-settings changes nothing)

Mine doesn't so I added this line to openbox' autostart.sh.
BTW, is there some other place to put it, so it would be session-independent ?

as far as i know its either
dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
or
