I installed Statler 2 on my office machine a couple of days ago, and the updates were excruciatingly slow (but browsing was fine). Apt-spy finally saved the day. Would Corenominal consider including this or an alternative as default after first install and also for system-upgrades?

That'd be fine too. As long as there's some way of automatically picking the fastest mirror. It seems such an obvious thing, I wonder why all the distros don't have it. It's not like pinging the mirrors takes a lot of time.

So, did you implement it yourself allready? How about finding a solution and providing us with a patch? I'm sure a feature request with some work done beforehand has a much higher chance.

The solution is to use apt-spy or netselect-app. There is no patch; its just a program.
