I have discovered that there is a fine art in gas station coffee and that's to keep it simple. The "Gas Station" in question is the "fancy" one here in town of the 2 we have. I mean, I live in a rural area. I don't expect my gas station to have a "House Blend" or a "Columbian Blend", I want gas station coffee. Coffee that comes in Regular or Decaf. A little cream and some sugar...BAM! I'm out the door.

I-Hop has some great coffee as long as it involves an Omelet, hash browns and pancakes.

Dennis Leary's diatribe on Coffee flavored coffee is all I can think of when I read this thread. (Can't believe it hasn't been posted yet.)

Oh I remember "coffee houses" in the 60's in Montreal. My favourite was "The Café Preg" in the basement of an old building that looked like it was once a wine cellar with the brick walls the arched openings between sections. Come to think of it, the smoke that hung in the place like a fog had a distinct sweet smell at times too. It closed at sunrise!

I went back one in the 90's - talk about change, the name was the same but they had plastered over the walls, put in expensive tables and chairs and the waiter was in a waist coat. They ruined the place! - my opinion.

winotree's poor little old gray-haired momma's best-ever coffeecake recipe tongue

3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
3 teasp. double-acting baking powder
1 teasp. salt
1 cup soft shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 cup milk
1 teasp. vanilla extract
1½ cups light-brown sugar, packed
3 tablesp. flour
2½ to 3 tablesp. cinnamon
¾ cup melted butter
1½ cups light or dark raisins, rinsed in hot water
1½ cups coarsely chopped walnuts

Start heating oven to 350°F. Grease bottoms of two 8"x8"x2" pans. Sift the first three ingredients. With electric mixer at medium speed, or "cream" or with spoon, thoroughly mix shortening with granulated sugar, then add eggs, until very light and fluffy--about 4 mins. altogether.

Then, at low speed, or "blend," beat in alternately, just until smooth, flour mixture in fourths and combined milk and vanilla in thirds. Spread one fourth of batter in each pan; top with one fourth of combined brown sugar, 3 tablesp. flour, and cinnamon: pour on one fourth melted butter; then sprinkle with one fourth raisins and nuts. Repeat.

Bake 50 minutes or until done. Makes 16 to 20 servings. roll

Note: cake may also be baked in one 13"x10"x2" pan 50 minutes or until done.

I've made no corrections to this recipe, first copyrighted in 1942, to accommodate or account for today's tastes. You may change it howsoever to suit your diet. tongue

Anyone ever try to replace their morning brew with either an energy drink or those five-hour energies? First you feel like you're all good, then you feel a bit tired, then you get the jitters followed by a feeling that resembles death.

From the first time I saw those "energy drinks" my brain said: There's trouble! And I've stayed away from them.

-Just visit my neck of the woods, we have tons of small coffee shops in town that also do "light," food and tea, etc.

I think in the downtown area we have to have at least five or six, (this is a small town, by the way, ~30,000 in the winter, and we have a very small downtown, tongue )

Unfortunately we're supposed to be getting another Starbucks; I don't particularly care for coffee as a daily drink, I drink massive amounts of iced tea/sweet tea instead, but even I can tell that when I'm treating myself there are better options.

$7 for a coffee? WOW! Oh yea, I'm over the hill, I remember a bottomless cuppa @ 25¢ I keep forgetting that and it's 10 pesos here - about $2.25

Many years ago, my father was a chef in a big restaurant . . . back then, coffee was $.10 ... ten cents ... a dime.

He complained when it went up to 25 cents . . . he would say, "Damn, someday, they're gonna charge for a glass of water"

I remember while on hoilday, a few years back, I was in New Zealand.
They kept wanting to sell me a "short white"

What's a 'short white' ? A small cup of coffee with the milk already added.

Apparently there are a few parts of the US where people might order a coffee with cream and sugar as a "hot blond on sand", but that used to just be diner staff argot. I guess nostalgia and internet searches are causing things like this to become more mainstream.

I can imagine. I remember my old man coming home from the bi-monthly shopping trip and complaining about the cost of food. 8 bags, they were the big heavy paper bags, of food for $25-30 to feed a family of four for two weeks.

A short white. Neat. Here if you want a black coffee that's OK but if you ask for "un cortado" (cut) if comes with a "touch" of milk. And it's a "toy" cup. You know those things you buy for your daughters to play with, about that size. I call it a free sample, but not free.

I always get a "doble" (doble) un doble cortado. And that double is almost as big as a normal sized coffee mug in Canada/US. big_smile

Maybe so but from what I read here Starbucks doesn't sell coffee they sell something they call coffee but it tastes like something else. My God, could George Carlin have had fun with that one. I can hear it now...

They have passwords for slightly differing flavors of a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike coffee and if you ask for a coffee they ask you "What kind?" which is when you enter a password. Something like "A vente mochafrappadappashoopidydoopidiespressochino with extra gay" and then they hand you a cup of a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike coffee.
