This is probably more of an Ubuntu problem than a #! problem, but I wanted to see if I was the only one to experience it. After performing the CLI install from the mini.iso featured on the Ubuntu website I found that the grub configuration file was missing the "root" entry, without which I couldn't get it to boot. Fortunately I was able to overcome this by booting from the Live CD and editing the file on the hard drive. Has this issue been reported upstream, or is it unique to me?

Interesting, I've done a number of these and never struck this problem. Was it an Intrepid install?

Yes, this was Intrepid (8.10). I've done it 3 times - on 2 different PCs - and experienced the same issue.
I should add that once overcome (by editing the the grub.conf/menu.lst file) the #! experience is pleasant indeed.
