Distrowatch

As I'm sure everyone knows, we've been moving up the Distrowatch list. We're somehitng like #58 in the 6month ranking, though we'll drop a few positions when something else (read: inferior) is released.

But I juts played about with the settings, and instead of looking at 6month, looked at 30days and 7days.

30days: we're top30. Something like 27.

7days: top10 baby wink Number 8 most hits on Distrowatch in the last 7 days.

thats more than PCLinuxOS, Puppy, Arch, Slackware and Gentoo!!

We're only losing to Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Mint, Sabayon (who has had a release out recently), Fedora, Debian and Mandriva.

We have more hits than kubuntu and Gentoo combined in those 7days =DDD

We almost have twice what Slackware have.

Couldn't we all just hit the Distrowatch page and watch our numbers rise?

In fairness, we had a full release recently, but yes, we're higher than I thought we would be.

I expect us to fall in february.

@Philip: Have you looked at all at the 9.04 alpha's etc? Because hopefully the aim would be to have #! 9.04 out shortly after Ubuntu make their release official. (Maybe even before if you trust RC1 or RC2 =P)

Yes, I have had a quick look, but I have not had chance to have a thorough play. I am currently working towards getting the current release series in a good enough shape to move to Jaunty. The recent decision to move the project to Launchpad has meant a fair amount of extra work needs doing. still, I am looking forward to Jaunty, everything I have seen and read so far seems to indicate that it will be an excellent release; and having an excellent release to build on top of is always good! smile The Ubuntu developers are doing great work.

Re: Distrowatch

I've been looking forward to Jaunty too.

If all goes well, i'm planning on making 9.04 my main OS. As in, I wipe my laptop and thats what I get.

It's got the power for a full level distro (even KDE) but I think that if 9.04 is good, I'll maybe put #! 9.04 on it

Re: Distrowatch

A position in the top 10 on distrowatch could give rise to some expectations. big_smile
I hope "people" allow this distro to mature. Philip is just laying the foundations for longterm development (Launchpad e.d.).

Re: Distrowatch

i think ppl are inherently distro-sluts.. and we shouldnt put too much into 7day distrowatch ranking..but over time(years?), im sure CB will do very well indeed. i think the eee-version will play a big role.. both xandros and windows users will want to try a leaner alternative..(i have no faith in windows7)
..we will probably have to be prepared for hordes of noobs and converts wink

The unwashed masses, wow . I tried PCLinux OS some time ago and thought then it was the best thing since Emacs. Now that I've tried other distros and moved around quite allot my taste has refined. So lets not run away with stats and focus on the experience and help others enjoy what we have found.

Re: Distrowatch

well since people had mentioned it I made a python script to check crunchbangs distrowatch ranking, you can use it for conky or probably a pipe menu. It needs beautiful soup though so if you wanna try it:

sudo apt-get install python-beautifulsoup

then use the script here http://www.crunchbanglinux.org/pastebin/126

edit: if you use it with conky I'd set the interval pretty high, it takes a second or two to run and I'm sure the rankings aren't going to change that fast. I'd recommend 3600 so it checks hourly. Heres a screenshot:
2ezseg8.png

edit again: heres a prettier version http://www.crunchbanglinux.org/pastebin/128 it works exactly the same just the search it uses on distrowatch looks nicer (in the code) . Also if you want the 30 day ranking just change the url in the code to http://distrowatch.com/index.php?dataspan=4

iggykoopa: thanks and cool. Going to have to learn me some python! I wonder if this kind of activity might pad the numbers at distrowatch? Here's my conky with

glad you like it big_smile and no it wont pad the numbers, it just opens the frontpage of distrowatch then finds the ranking.

Re: Distrowatch

This is NOT a question but more of a informational post about the post ranking in DistroWatch.com
As you can see it is just a quote...

What is this "Page Hit Ranking"?

It is a light-hearted way of looking at popularity of distribution. Since each distribution has its own page, I though it would be fun to track the number of visitors viewing individual distribution pages. The HPD figure represents hits per day by unique visitors; as determined by the visitor's IP address. This prevents those readers, not disciplined enough, from rigging the results by re-loading the pages multiple times. The idea is to identify which distributions attract most attention and to rank them accordingly. Admittedly, the page clicks by themselves may not always reflect the popularity correctly, but they should, over time, provide an indication about what is hot among the readers frequenting these pages.

These rules have been implemented to prevent various counter reloading schemes:

    * Repeated page and counter reloads in short or regular intervals are not permitted. If you are inclined to set up cron jobs to repeatedly "wget" your favourite distro's page counter, then please do yourself a favour and go to see a psychologist. You need help.
    * All suspicious page hit counts will be investigated and any regularly reloaded counts will be deducted from the total count.
    * The repeat offender's IP address might be banned from accessing all areas of DistroWatch.

Re: Distrowatch

yeah thats why on the script I used I just have it scrape the front page for the number...no suspicious activity that way big_smile

Re: Distrowatch

Used updated script...works fine at displaying the ranking...but in the terminal, it displays

Conky: cant select (): Invalid Argument
Conky: cant select (): Invalid Argument
Conky: cant select (): Invalid Argument
Conky: cant select (): Invalid Argument
Conky: cant select (): Invalid Argument
...

again and again and again...it just spams for hundreds of lines...unending. Suggestions?

Re: Distrowatch

This just in from iggykoopa:

Distrowatch changed the layout of their page. If you replace the line that says "rankings = soup.find....." with the following it'll work again:

rankings = soup.find(text= "H.P.D*").parent.parent.parent.find(text= "CrunchBang").parent.parent.parent.find("th", {"class" : "phr1"}).string

if it breaks again let me know. If you want to post the fix in the original thread that's fine.

I run two scripts, both executable and both in my path:
iggykoopa-distrowatch.py

#!/usr/bin/env python
# by iggykoopa
# updtated 27 Apr 2013

import urllib2
from BeautifulSoup import BeautifulSoup

#Current rating;
address = "http://distrowatch.com/"
#Last 30 days:
#address = "http://distrowatch.com/index.php?dataspan=4"
try:
    website = urllib2.urlopen(address)
    soup = BeautifulSoup(''.join(website))
    rankings = soup.find(text= "H.P.D*").parent.parent.parent.find(text= "CrunchBang").parent.parent.parent.find("th", {"class" : "phr1"}).string
    print rankings
except:
    print "Not Available"

iggykoopa-dw.py

#!/usr/bin/env python
