The Hardware side of minimalism... kind of...

Recently, I've been taking a good look at Dell's upcoming ultra portable laptop called Adamo, and several things have happened.
For one, I can now never look at any laptop the same way that I looked at the Adamo. It's beauty, it's simplicity, it just looks so beautiful and minimalistic, possibly looking beautiful because of it's minimalistic look.
Secondly, it's gotten me thinking about how laptops are built. Most laptops simply aren't built with looks in mind. When someone mentions a laptop, the usual first response is to ask about it's specs. However, this thinking has led to sub-par chassis being made with sub-par materials. Take a look at the new MacBook lineup. A solid titanium frame that's clean, pristine, and good to look at. The same with Dell's Adamo. When I first looked at the Adamo, I instantly fell in love with it. I have never felt so strongly as to impulse-buy a laptop, but the Adamo has actually generated those kinds of feeling inside of me. It's drop-dead gorgeous. I hardly ever see this kind of attention to details in any laptop, which is probably why I instantly fell in love w/ the Adamo.

Hmm, it would seem that I've gone on and ranted. Oh well. Oh, and for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about (Adamo) here's a link for your viewing pleasure: Dell Adamo

Anyways, now for my main purpose of making this thread.
Has anyone seen any minimalistic-looking laptops that are very easy on the eyes, yet feature packed?
Or your thoughts on this...

It looks like Foxconn will make that particular Dell notebook.

For me that would be a bit troubling due to reports that by design or just error,
the BIOS from Foxconn motherboards has an anti-Linux bias:

Well at least Foxconn released a fix:

As for the laptop, if having looks makes it much more expensive then Im not really interested. It looks beautiful and all but its the inside that counts big_smile

True, I suppose.
Tho after reading about it and checking out pictures of it, it kind of hit me just how little style and looks are taken into account when creating a laptop... at least when compared to the Adamo tongue

Re: The Hardware side of minimalism... kind of...

i have a bias against dell's - totally a personal thing. After swapping out 200+ motherboards on dells because of fault/blown/leaking capacitors i just don't trust them!
I know its not dells fault as it wasn't their parts - but still they still passed them out of testing......

Yeah, I remember having a severe hatred towards Dell, but I've forgotten by now...

Re: The Hardware side of minimalism... kind of...

I hate the style of keys on the recent Dells. They feel cheap as well - at least on the models I have encountered. Sony Vaios look nice, but they're copying Apple so much with the styling it's not funny. The new MacBooks are the dogs-danglies for me. I'm still sorely tempted. I'm not a big fan of the Voodoo or AlienWare style laptops, although I did come close to buying a Rock a few years ago.

I'm biased, but I really like the look of the Eee PC netbooks. Some of the new models on show at CES looked very nice, albeit a bit Apple-ish.
