I spent the past few days struggling with USB wifi for my new computer: replaced network-manager with wicd, then back to network-manager, looked at ndiswrapper for my old linksys wifi adapter.
For what it's worth, I found some good information on the wireless page at kernel.org, and learned all about the zd1211rw driver. There are many, many wifi cards (PCI, USB, etc.) that use the zd1211/1211b chipset and its progeny (Atheros acquired the company and rebranded the chipset AR5007UG and a couple other AR variants).
If you're struggling with WEP and WPA, then you should take a look at your wifi access device. I replaced my Linksys with a Belkin F5D7050 USB adapter, which worked out of the box (even without the firmware I downloaded to a thumb drive and was about to install).

could this be included in Statler by default, or is it something of a different nature?

I've seen the same with the realtek stuff, the rtl819X... link here. not sure if it falls under that chipset, but its a popular topic in ubuntu and other forums. Wish it could be included or include
build-essentials.
here's the driver download for Realtek if anyone has that. From what i gather, its becoming popular on the netbooks.
