Philip, you ROCK!

For what it's worth, when I did a Squeeze install a while ago (with wired network connection), the installer did detect my card, asked if I wanted to enable non-free, downloaded the binary blob and rolled the joint for me.  I haven't tried installing Statler alpha yet, but I'm guessing it might do the same thing if I jacked into the local Matrix.

If its something you have control of, like the broadcom wifi, then I'd like you to try your best to get 10.3 in.

Hmm, to be honest with you, providing support for wireless cards is comparatively easy. Providing support for proprietary graphic drivers is going to be more difficult. For the time being, it might just be a case of providing some good documentation.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

installation was trouble free.
the new artwork (themes and icons) are great. it is pretty lovely out of the box.
all my eeepc hardware works fine.
xfce version is a lot nicer than expected.

i do get a hang of about 20secs at startup. the shortcut keys drop out occasionally too. will investigate more.
on the initial hang, it just shows the desktop and the mouse.

I am not sure about the hang at startup, but I think the shortcut keys issue is a common one. The next time it happens, try running these commands in a terminal:

killall xfce4-settings-helper
xfce4-settings-helper &

^ is quite ugly, but it works for me. It would be good to try and find a more permanent fix.

The application line-up is quite minimal at the moment and it will revised in future releases, so the CLI menu could make a comeback. Regarding the themes, which ones are you missing? As you are probably aware, themes generally have a small footprint, so if you could supply a list, I will look into adding more themes for the next release. smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

I just tried the Xfce version now and installation went by quicker, however I think thats because this time I selected Text Install instead of Text Expert tongue

  • When I booted into Statler Xfce, I accidently thought it was the Openbox version because it doesn't use xfce4-panel.

  • Have you consider changing the Openbox menu to look more like the Xfce one?

  • I have a minor request for the GDM theme: change the text field to have square corners instead of rounded ones. And reduce the padding around the text too.

  • In Statler Openbox, there is no menu item for gdmsetup.

  • For the Live CD boot menu, there needs to be an option to boot from the hd or otherwise exit.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

now testing... snappy and it uses a little bit less RAM than 9.04 (it used around 75~80 MB RAM vs Statler used 55~60 MB)

I have now noticed that even I picked Latinamerican keyboard at installation it didn't changed, it is  still english keyboard layout. (using xfce)

I'd be really interested to know if that works for you again. Despite being text based the new Debian installer really is quite powerful. Actually I shouldn't say 'despite being text based' because I prefer it that way smile

Hey Philip, any chance we will get a dark theme for Statler? Pretty please with a cherry on top? big_smile

I think this should be doable. smile I am waiting to see if Sergio17771 replies with a list of themes which are missing. Meanwhile, maybe we could start a new thread for themes and artwork for statler? I know it is not mission critical, but it is a fun pastime and I know there are a few of us on the forums who like to play about with the look and feel. It would be great to get some community created artwork into the builds. smile

+1 pretty please

Update on alpha: Works great smile Using 88.5MB of RAM running a live version from the usb - crazy! Archbang installed runs around that, so corenominal, you done good!

I'm a +1 for eventual integrated broadcom support (i know this is just an alpha) as me + ndistwrapper and fwcutter = sad kernel.

I'm not really sure what else to say because everything (except wireless) works...its like I just reinstalled 9.04 and it got prettier, had to believe an alpha can be so stable smile

Hi Corenominal,  I am very impressed with your work and the highly enthusiastic and refined posts of the crunchbang community. I have been following crunchbang forums for a long time just  to relax my self. Despite not posting, I consider  most of  you as 'friends' I tried the amd64 version  and it is just very nice. Awesome work. Congratulations.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

well I got bit by the grub install error while trying to use usb as well. Using unetbootin with cdrom-detect/try-usb=true allows the install to work, just not to finish. I tried finishing the installation without installing grub, so I could go back and install later, but it wouldn't let me.

Well this didn't go exactly as planned. hmm I did the dishes and made tea and it still said "Attempting to boot from USB drive - Syslinux 3.63 DEB-2008-07-15 EBIOS" And well I think something should happen little faster even with my old machine... Well I will research this.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Hi, I've found CrunchBang Statler by chance and after testing it live on my eeepc 1000H, I've installed it on an external HD.
Text install (from the iso dded to a USB stick, not Unetbootin) when smoothly, not choosing cdrom-detect/try-usb=true but /dev/sdc, also not choosing to have grub installed on the mbr of the main drive as offered by the installer but rather on /dev/sdc. It was blasting fast compared to the usual Debian net-install!
When rebooting, everything went fine too; all the entries for my various distros were there and working, and Statler booted nicely.
Thanks for this great version!

I had the same thing for people with Nvidia on Tota Linux. You need to add the sid repo to get them working:

I am downloading the OpenBox iso now. I thought that the OB and Xfce versions would have been on 1 single iso. I have all my files ready to create a Fluxbang edition, can't wait !!

Looked at my Statler-partition after that grub-install-failure and there was no user-files under home. This was with "Text Install", did not try "Text Expert".

Install from CD went fast and without problems - apart from grub2 being installed by default without asking for installing grub-legacy...
Though i installed in german, keyboard defaults to "gb" after restart. Put "de" as first entry in the "setxkbmap"-option in autostart.sh - now all OK!
Everything runs fine so far with boot-times better than madbox 9.10 and on par with archbang on my machine. Feels very solid. Openbox-i686 here. smile

Next to install the nvidia-drivers and than an usb-install on EEE901.
