Exactly what it says on the tin. My feelings about Mono are the same as those the majority of us have about PulseAudio. I guess it isn't so much a performance issue as a distaste for .NET.

Previous versions of CrunchBang haven't included Mono so I wouldn't worry about "Statler".

+1. This is why I thought this thread was a flame bait. Crunchbang never used any Mono app, how to remove something that is not there?
I think we should choose apps for merit according to our goals. Mono apps are great, but they are not lightweight. Crunchbang is supposed (I think) to be a lightweight distro, so Mono apps should be out. For that reason only, not for RMS paranoia.

Just to be clear, this wasn't intended as flame bait. I was just voicing an opinion against programs like Banshee which, while very nice, bring in things that some of us don't like.

ok. just don't get how someone does not like a runtime library.

There are some fears perhaps unfounded, perhaps reasonable over it's association to .net and the implications that could have...
I use it on my netbook (Mint 7) but, not on my desktop (karmic from minimal). Honestly it doesn't do enough to justify having it in a distro since so much of the Linux community is up in arms about it.

I agree and disagree. If it is not needed, then there is absolutely no reason to add mono. Extra dependencies for no reason makes little sense.
But, if there is a need for it, insomuch that it can fill a very important gap that would be otherwise left open or filled with an inferior product, I say add it as opposed to going without due to a philosophical difference of opinion.

There are currently no plans to include any Mono applications.

Mono: An transmutable illness one begets through kissing [Microsoft's ass].
</flame>
I am likely preaching to the choir here, but this one is more an issue of ethics and liability than it is about functionality, since mono doesn't offer much of a gain for distros that include it. Plus, as stated above, apps that depend on it do tend to be heavy.

Richard Stallman say the same "ban mono"
Nope, he doesn't. He discourages it's use: http://www.fsf.org/news/dont-depend-on-mono
"This is not to say that implementing C# is a bad thing. Free C# implementations permit users to run their C# programs on free platforms, which is good. (The GNU Project has an implementation of C# also, called Portable.NET.) Ideally we want to provide free implementations for all languages that programmers have used."
Calling that a "ban" is stretching it.

I use Mono for programming and I use Banshee for my Ipod on #!. I try to follow the rule of: if you don't like it then don't use it, because there is always going to be programs that I hate that you may love or the other way around. I do not have the right to tell you what you can and can't use nor do you to tell me. I am not trying to start a fight I am just giving my two cents on the matter, and since when did Richard Stallman become the end all be all about Linux. He has done great things for the open source community of that there is no doubt, but his intrest's lie with The FSF and not Linux.

Good points Prime, especially your sig.
If you use/need it, then we have another tautology.
