Re: My Conky Config

what about just simple ole

${scroll 20 3}${time %I:%M %p}

where the 20 is how big of a space to scroll in and the 3 is the amount of characters it moves with each update. you can match up the update so that you get continuously moving effect.

mrpeachy wrote:

this code produces a scrolling date and time message, from right to left
i'm using the width of the conky window to hide the text to the right.  the text moves to the left and stops for a few seconds then resets.
this gives me a "ticker tape" effect, but is relatively light on processor power

what i would really like to do is have the text be continually moving, like it was going around in a circle... but because i can't get a negative goto, i cant get the text to travel past the left edge of the conky window.

heres the text moving... http://blip.tv/file/3026524

i need a way to "hide" the text as it goes to the left so that i can create the illusion of a cycle

well, that sounds like what i'm looking for, i'll try it out... one of these days im gonna have a thorough read through the list of conky variables!
edit - the code needs to be this:  ${scroll 10 ${time %a %b %d %I:%M %p}}
but i cant get the text to scroll again immediately, it waits till the last character has gone all the way across the space before restarting.

Re: My Conky Config

another variation on the matrix rain, looks to be much lighter processor wise, but provides plenty of movement and randomness...also it seems plenty of "glitches" due to scroll putting a blank at the end of lines (an improvement would be to change the lengths of the text lines that scroll works with to varying lengths.)

This gives 2 lines side by side.

Nice.  I like the way that the text all flows down in a more uniform manner.  I was thinking about doing this smile

GREAT STUFF!

I love the way people are changing conky from the dull boring text only info package, which really does have it's place, to works of art inspired only by imagination and a bit of #! - - As in:  "#! /bin/sh"

Or lua, fonts, etc. etc.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.   big_smile

If i must confess, my everyday conky is just that... lines of informational text (a couple of weather icons, and a few bars).  Partly because im not the only one who uses the computer.  I think that if my wife turned on the computer to find a high concept conky her eyes would roll right out of their sockets smile

Although one of these days i might come up with a concept that i really love and go with it regardless.

@Tawan - why don't you record a little and post a clip of that conky?

Ohhhhhhhhhh - do a webcam video of that would ya!!  big_smile

Why not do what I did, my wife didn't like the FULL SCREEN conky either but got used to it, I have a whole bunch in their own window and other then at boot-up, only call-em when I need them.

I went from this: Weather-images4-300x240.png to this: 1-2-3_Liner-300x240.png for my everyday conky, BUT (there's always a but) thanks to a fellow Montréaler and #!'er, arpinux, and his little tip for OpenBox, that I call "Conky-in-a-Box" my system boots up to this: All_Conky-300x240.png

Now if that doesn't make your wife's eyes roll NOTHING will.  smile

Once I read them in the morning, I close them and they sit idle waiting in the wings untill called on stage. You can see my OB Menu entries for the various "nameBOX" conkys: WeatherBox, ProcessesBox et al, and the "OB oneliner" is the regular up all the time conky.  I need it there because at times I'm building/testing conkys for others so I have to shut it down.

Re: My Conky Config

^^ That's certainly hard to follow, but here's a nice minimal conky I've put together. The code for the graph that displays hard drive space is stolen from Hanna, if i remember correctly. Anyway, it's my first attempt at making one of these myself:

I like my desktop clean and simple.
Desktop is:  Xfce
Conky is a single-line across the top
Custom made icons in the panel.

And I'm working on two more.  smile

Mind you within minutes of booting up, there is only the oneliner and the calendar across the top left, everything else goes.  I'm still calling up "my" version of the #! default conky every now and then for the superkeys  smile

That has to be one of the most simple, elegant one liner conkys I've seen.  Well done!

Yea, it is kind messy when I boot up, but they each have their function, and disappear withing minutes of boot up.

And there is a change in the planning stages for my one liner, and two more in progress and I'm editing one of the one's existing already.

I know I'm addicted to conky, but I can quit anytime.  big_smile

It's the development version of Xubuntu-Lucid 10.04 Alpha1 that had the Mint-8 Xfce repositories added.
Hence, a Mint-ified Xubuntu-Lucid.

So far, I haven't 'b0rked' it, yet. lol

Oh!  So that explains the the crunchie-minty taste!

{sigh} I remember those chocolate bars well!

Do you have OpenBox tossed in there too?

Re: My Conky Config

Ok, I have a new matrix-conky... This started from one of Iggy's lua matrixconky that he was working on a few days ago. Right now, it's a little heavy on the cpu side of things, I have to learn lua better and maybe I can get this easier on my system.

tMzY0dQ

tMzY0dg

tMzY0dw

And video.
big_smile

Here is the code if anyone wants to look, it's pretty messy...
.conkyrc
matrix.lua

No, sir.  I'm an Xfce junkie!!  I like my desktop ... fast and pretty.

But, I do love the tint2 panel.  Although, I've not had any problems with #!Crunchbang 9.04 or Madbox 9.04

/me eats a Crunchy Mint candy-bar

I used to be an Xfce junkie, until I discovered OpenBox

Fast and pretty? Let's see (my opinion) a panel on the top and bottom (Gnome, Xfce) is NOT pretty, remove them and you have a blank desktop that depends on the wallpaper to be pretty.

tint2 sitting on the bottom is the only "panel" I have ever had the was totally transparent (and worked properly)

Therefore I say to you: #! Is Fast And Pretty!

Eating that bar in front of me is pure torture!!!  sad

Have a nice cavity ... errrrr ... day.  big_smile

Just FYI but having Xfce with 2 bars is a Xubuntu setting. Most other Xfce distros will only have one.

Plus you can always change it to only one bar and then move that bar to the bottom.
