How-To: Install LogMeIn Hamachi

Installing the latest version of LogMeIn Hamachi is pretty easy.

1. Download Hamachi (either 32-bit or 64-bit) for Linux (.deb Command Line Version) from logmein.com

2A. Right click on the downloaded file and and select 'Open with GDebi Package Installer' and click then click the 'Install Package' button

2B. Or you can run the following command from a terminal

dpkg -i <LogMeIn Hamachi DEB installation filename>

3. Launch Hamachi by running the following commands from a terminal

sudo hamachi login # Changes the client's status to online
sudo hamachi set-nick <nickname> # Changes your nickname
sudo hamachi join <network-id> # Joins a network
sudo hamachi attach <LogMeIn account> # Attaches your client to a LogMeIn account

A few other useful commands you may need that:

sudo hamachi logout # Changes the clients status to offline
sudo hamachi do-join <network-id> # Sends a request to network that requires manual approval
sudo hamachi list # Lists the networks and their peers that you are a member of

Hamachi is intended as a zero-configuration virtual private network (VPN) application that is capable of establishing direct links between computers that are behind NAT firewalls without requiring reconfiguration (when the user's PC can be accessed directly without relays from the Internet/WAN side); in other words, it establishes a connection over the Internet that emulates the connection that would exist if the computers were connected over a local area network.

What that really means and why you should care I have no idea.

It's an easy way to create a VPN between remote locations through the Internet.

Re: How-To: Install LogMeIn Hamachi

I managed to get Hamatchi working thanks to Alad's excellent post, but there is a bit more to it, so I thought I'd post the full solution to help others.

Follow the steps below:-

  1. Download and install logmein-hamatchi, I used the 64 bit deb file from here.

  2. Provide the correct version of libc6 on the system.
    Mine is 64 bit, so I have provided the code for that:-

    sudo -i
    mkdir /usr/local/ldlib && cd /usr/local/ldlib
    wget http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6_2.15-0ubuntu10.5_amd64.deb
    dpkg -X libc6_2.15-0ubuntu10.5_amd64.deb .
    cp -r lib/* .  && rm -r etc usr lib
    exit
  3. Create /usr/bin/hamachi and put the following into it:-

    #!/bin/bash
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/ldlib/x86_64-linux-gnu:/usr/lib /usr/bin/hamachi "$@"
  4. Copy the file you just created to /usr/local/sbin so that it works as root too.

  5. CD into /opt/logmein-hamachi/bin and create a file called hamachid_ containing the following code (you'll need to do this as root) :-

    #!/bin/bash
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/ldlib/x86_64-linux-gnu:/usr/lib /opt/logmein-hamachi/bin/hamachid "$@"
  6. Now you need to edit /etc/init.d/logmein-hamatchi (again as root).
    Change this line

    DAEMON=/opt/logmein-hamachi/bin/hamachid

    To

    DAEMON=/opt/logmein-hamachi/bin/hamachid_

Now, you should be able to start the hamachi daemon and login to a network. See the hamatchi docs for instructions on this.

I hope this helps others trying to run Hamatchi on #! and once again, thanks to Alad for putting me on the right path.

Re: How-To: Install LogMeIn Hamachi

An additional step to vascowhite's helpful addition:
hamachid_ needs to be executable, so...

cd /opt/logmein-hamachi/bin/
sudo chmod +x hamachid_

Great write up.

EDIT

Both hamachi and hamachid_ need to be executable. I did not see that was not written before.

Re: How-To: Install LogMeIn Hamachi

Hi guys,

I have two problems with Hamachi, my friends can ping me but I can't connect to their gameroom (IWD2), i think this is because when they diagnose me, the outcome is "This peer is not eligible for remote testing". Also my "lmi account: [my_account] (pending"). How make it not pending smile?

Thanks
