Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

oh my that was too easy. thanks anonymous. so, how do you redecorate? is there a hotkey? are there hotkeys or an addon to place the min, max and close buttons in the nav bar?

also, if i like it enough how can i make firefox always open undecorated?

oh- one other thing. is there an autohide for tint2 or a setting so firefox runs over it? i would love to be able to get #! set up where i only see the nav bar and the open tabs and the rest of the screen is browser only.

slainte!

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

I dont know of a hotkey, but there should still be a border (very thin 1px) where you can right-click.

If you want Firefox to always run undecorated, you have to edit your rc.xml file. Look at this guide and look for the Applications section.

Corners seem to give more space to change the mouse pounter, likely due to the convergence of 2 lines, instead of desperately poking at one.

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

I installed #! on my AAO about two weeks ago. It was the best thing I could have ever done with this machine. Previously, I was using Fedora 10 XFCE, which for me, an Ubuntu user at home, was very uncomfortable and slow as Christmas. I stumbled upon #! and I haven't looked back. I just want to say a little bit about my setup.

I did apply the Kuki kernel, and everything works great. The Wifi LED started working for the first time in months! I'm still using ath5k drivers, since I haven't encountered problems with them yet. I installed the acerfand program, but haven't set it to start on boot, since the fan noise really isn't that annoying to me. If I am ever in a very quiet place, like a library, I just run the command and it's quiet as a mouse.

And I am still surprised to this day by how clean and fast #! is! A huge difference from Fedora. I'm able to do so much more now with my puny 512MB of RAM. I can run Firefox with multiple tabs, my Quanta HTML editor, and watch YouTube videos without a hiccup now. YouTube videos used to be an impossibility with Fedora.

I just want to say thanks to the #! team for making a dynamite distro! I've been telling all of my friends about it.

But I do have one question before I go. Since Ubuntu 9.04 has arrived, and #! 9.04 will be coming soon, I was curious about what would happen when those of us with the Kuki kernel upgrade. Will it be replaced by the normal linux kernel, forcing us to do the Kuki tango over again? Just wondering. Thanks again!

I'm planning on staying away from 9.04 until they figure out the Intel graphics regression issues. It really doesn't offer much in the way of new features anyways.

ta much for wiki-installed #! on my AA1-110L and all is well, after trying Linpus,gOS,Fed10xfce and Debian. #! is the best- stable and snappy.

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

Hi.
Crunchbang is awesome. Its my first time using Openbox and it seems to fit so well with AAO. My only problem seems to be with the wifi, I've followed all the instructions from the aspireone-how-to, including downloading and installing the kuki kernel. I did not however install the madwifi drivers, this is because I was using Xubuntu before and it use to work great with the ath5k drivers. Moving along, my AAO(with #!) seems to pick up all the wifi access points and I can see them in the network manager. But when I put in my WPA key, it makes an attempt to connect to my network, fails and then asks for the WPA again, but where instead of having the key I intially put in, it gives me a new scrambled passkey. This continues to repeat itself everytime I re-enter the WPA key. So I'm not sure how to remedy this situation. I've done some research on the internet but havn't found anything yet.
If you need anymore information, please feel free to ask.

Finally got round to installing crunchbang on the WIFE's AAO. Not installed the alternative wifi drivers yet but all seems to be working fine.

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

Hi, a while ago aeiah mentioned it being a pain in the arse to compile the acerhdf module for the kuki kernal but had managed to do so..I was wondering if there was anybody willing to post on how to achieve this?

I've also tried the latest kuki kernals from sickboy and the kuki site - both of which are supposed to include the acerhdf module - unfortunately (after sudo modprobe acerhdf) neither work properly - i.e. it appears the module is installed, I get reports of the temperature etc and fanstate which says = 0 but the fan is on.

Here are my observations on acerhdf:

  -  Stock kernal, downloaded and made acerhdf module myself - works fine

  -  kuki kernal from wiki (linux-image-2.6.28sickboy-kuki_0.4_i386.deb) - can't make the module yourself (see above - maybe someone can inform as to how this is achieved?)

  -  kuki kernel from (http://www.kuki.me/downloads/) includes acerhdf module - doesn't work with crunchbang - reports temp etc but fan is still on despite state = 0 (the module in this kernel works perfectly with kuki pre-release v1.7)

  -  kuki kernel from (http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/view … erhdf+kuki) linux-image-2.6.29.1.20090414.sickboy_2.6.29.1.sickboy.20090414_i386.deb - includes acerhdf but does not work with crunchbang (same as above)

I'm using bios v.3309 and always remembered to modprobe acerhdf - plus add to etc/modules

Has anyone had similar problems? Able to help compiling the module with the kuki kernel?

Thanks

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

I actually managed to get it working with the sickboy kernel by following the instructions on the wiki, but ended up disabling it. Have you tried changing the temps in the config file?

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

Hi haven't, maybe that will kickstart it.  It's just an odd one in that the computer clearly thinks it is running (i.e. I can query the temperature, interval, on off temps, fan state) - it's just not turning the fan off.  I don't think it's an issure with my hardware as it works fine with kuki pre-release 1.7.  I've MD5'd my install ISO - that's ok, checked I didn't do anything silly in the install (not hat I'm aware off - would be pretty hard to screw things up here)

If I use the instructions on the wiki (i.e. acerfand) then my acer crashes as soon as it reaches the crunchbang x session - I read elsewhere that this was a common problem and that the acerhdf is compiled as a kernel module and avoids such issue.

I messed up with the instructions for the card reader fix and missed out a step. If you go back to the wiki then try out the updated steps and let me know if those work for you smile sorry about that. As for the hotkeys they also have a section in the wiki now.

I think the idea of some user interface tweaks for a netbook would be great.   I had to mod xorg.conf and then increase the font a bit in openbox.  that way the dialog boxes wernt huge but I could still see.

I am going to be adding this soon. Not had as much time as I would like lately and felt that getting the basic info for the Aspire One on the wiki was a priority. I will post here when I have had time to write this up.

Not had this problem myself being from the UK although I have seen a few people asking on IRC. I am by no means an expert at all and most of the wiki was trial and error from other sources, I just wanted to pass it on in an easy to use format so people did not have to spend weeks research like I have tongue You have already helped out by pointing out the problems you had with the guide and this is all I need right now really. Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

Hi Bassetts, I liked the Crunchbang very much, but having 2 issues.
I owe Acer Aspire 3696 series & have installed Crunchbang successfully 8 days back from live CD, it works great, but
1. I can't connect to net in spite of putting all the proper information from the service provider I obtained. I tried the network manager & FTP client but in vain. I have got ethernet connection. But my wifi on my laptop is broken, so it doesn't work.
The ethernet connection for the same laptop on windows works great though.
2. The VLC player doesn't recognize all DVDs. So couldn't watch a few DVDs.
3. The OS doesn't recognize the other partitions on the laptop, so I can't play music or can't retrieve info from the other partitions, sad!!!
Will appreciate your help, very much needed!

Could you be more specific about your third problem; what do you mean the partition isn't recognized? Have you tried launching PCManFM as root and seeing if you can access your partitions then?

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

COMPILING ACERHDF WITH KUKI KERNEL

If you have a look at my previous post regarding acerhdf I've been having a bit of a mare trying to get fan control implemented on my AAO with SSD and BIOS v.3309

The method described on the Wiki (using acerfand) would cause my AAO to poweroff randomly + I couldn't compile the latest acerhdf kernel modules with the kuki kernel referenced on the wiki (see quotes below for the reason).  I also tried the latest sickboy kernels which have the acerhdf module built in - for some reason they didn't work with crunchbang on my AAO.  I finally figured how to compile acerhdf myself which was nice - and I'm rather chuffed I figured it out as I'm new to the linux world.  So just thought I'd share:

fmcc wrote:

Hmm. There is a symbolic link /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/build
However, I can not read it: No such file or directory
Therefore, I am deleting /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/build

Hmm. The package shipped with a symbolic link /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/source
However, I can not read the target: No such file or directory
Therefore, I am deleting /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/source

As you can see from the quotes above there are some missing symbolic links.  To rectify this I did:

cd /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/

I took a look at the equivalent directory in the generic kernel and realised the link should point to:
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28sickboy-kuki/

so I created the symbolic link myself:

ln -sf /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28sickboy-kuki build

I then took a look at the Makefile in the extracted acerhdf_kmod directory.
  -  first the INST variable has a "/" at the end which needs to be removed otherwise you end up with a "//" in the copy path i.e. it should be ' INST    := $(DESTDIR)/lib/modules/$(shell uname -r) '
  -  second, that install directory mentioned in the line ' cp acerhdf.ko $(INST)/kernel/drivers/misc/' doesn't exist. So...
     cd /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/kernel/drivers
then
     sudo mkdir /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/kernel/drivers/misc

now when you follow the README.txt instructions for installation everything should work (it did for me!!)

Hope that is of use to someone!

P.S. I couldn't find the equivalent symbolic link for the "source" directory so didn't worry about creating it - it doesn't affect the above process

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

Hi Bassetts!

Nice tutorial.

A couple of things on the AAO110L.
For the fan section, the scerfand script needs a little tweak otherwise the computer just shuts down like a minute after running acerfand.
Simply modify two lines in the acerfand bash script so it looks like this:

case "$BIOS_VERSION" in
   "${BIOS_VERSION_3309}")
      #change: handle 3309 seperate 0xAF -> 0x21
      R_FAN=55
      R_TEMP=58
      FAN_CMD_OFF=21
      FAN_CMD_AUTO=00
      RAW_FAN_STATE_OFF="0x21"

And then on the hotkeys section you say modify the /usr/share/hotkey-setup/acer.hk
Uhm... I don't even have the hotkey-setup folder..... any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: CrunchBang on the Acer Aspire One

I also noticed the to start the acerfand at boot you need to do something different (might be on the AAO110L only)
I had written the steps previously at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … stcount=59.

I think I'll just add this two things to the wiki...
