Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

As I've said before, I'm continually growing, shall we say, less fond of my mobile device. Between its locked bootloader & write protected system partition (rendering it pretty much unrootable by anything short of wiping the entire device & loading a custom ROM) Motorola's user freedom is pretty much nonexistent. As soon as my upgrade rolls around in February, I'm getting me an LG G3

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ Or you could just get a Nexus device. The Nexus 5 is a year old but pretty reasonably priced even by today's standards. Nexus 6 was just announced and spec-wise it seems a pretty boss flagship device, with flagship pricing to match. Not sure how much of an upgrade Android 5.0 will turn out to be in terms of overall ecosystem though.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^^ For me, user freedom is the big thing. I like the G3, (& LG in general) because it's made with user freedom in mind. Specifically, in this case, the freedom to root the device & have complete control over its operation (something Google & its subsidiary manufacturers are ever-tightening their grip on)

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ User freedom is a relative thing, but if it's "freedom to root and have complete control" that you seek, then surely Nexus devices fit the bill more than most. All Nexus handsets have been unlockable/rootable in the past (afaik) and most good custom ROM makers usually have images for Nexus models available first. Doesn't matter who makes them since they're Google sanctioned developer devices. Fwiw, the Nexus 5 (and the Nexus 4 that preceded it) is made by LG. There's also that Oppo phone that comes installed with Cyanogenmod out of the box.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

A local organisation, which will remain nameless, is throwing out flatscreen monitors, because it is the cheapest/easiest way for them to re-equip. I asked for one to be "lost" en route and thrown my way, so I now have another 23" LG screen and dual display at last. It makes graphics editing sooo much easier when you don't need to scroll/zoom all the time to see round the tool panels smile

Maybe you could just get away with 2 -3 of these - a nice wraparound work space smile

Or even 1 -2 of these  yikes

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I've rooted my Nook Simple Touch (my favorite device in the world). Installed Read It Later, Aldiko (another book reader), and a newsreader. I could use my phone for these things, but e-ink is much easier on the eyes. Also grabbed FastMode2 for faster refresh. Feels pretty hackish afterwards, but I think I'll enjoy it. Only thing I would like to do now is replace the default dictionary. Not sure how that is done yet, though.

Think being able to read various formats with Aldiko will be my favorite part (and, of course, the Kindle app! big_smile ).

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

HTC are pretty good about rooting. Unlocked the bootloader and custom kernel flashing is almost encouraged.

If anyone is game, maybe porting openbox to the mobile platform would be kind of cool. I'm sure it's been suggested before. Having a #! Mobile version.
